A little off the theme, but I highly recommend this to anyone who has a nicotine addiction that deep down they would like to be rid of.

I smoked 20 a day for years and quit cold turkey after reading this. That was 5 years ago and not once have I missed smoking nor come close to relapse.

I suppose it is /fit/ related as smoking is one of the most anti fitness things a person can do.

you mean like books that have to do with fitness? or books that we're reading? I'm reading farenheit 451 currently (yes I know it's babby's first meme book) and I'm really liking it. just started it yesterday but might even finish it tonight or tomorrow.
>>
>>38438695
idk about fit approved but here are some books Ive read/am reading currently

Fiction:
John dies at the end
this book is full of spiders
The dark tower: the gunslinger

non-fiction and stuff:
A brief history of nearly everything
How to win friends and influence people
>>
>>38438927
I recently read the gunslinger too and without excess spoilers tbqh when it was revealed where the kid was from it kinda killed my mood for the entire thing
>>
>>38438975
Ive heard the series gets better and the gunslinger is the worst installment, just sort of a necessary read to get into the rest of them.

I'm interested (altough I'm a non-smoker), what are his methods for breaking an addiction?
>>
>>38439779

why, anon?
>>
>>38439855

it's quite easy in theory
>stop doing it

comes down to pure willpower and you wanting to stop more than the pull from the addiction.

It's about framing the addiction in your head in the right way, and becoming aware of your automated thought patterns which leads to you doing the thing you're addicted to.

I used to bite my nails til I was 25.

This right here is what I'm interested in, can you elaborate a bit more or should I just fuck off and read the book (don't wanna since I don't smoke)? A qt for your efforts.
>>
Shit tier books in here. OP, I read at lead one or two books a week.

I don;t know what you're into, but here are some of my favorites:

Non-fiction:
The Doctrine of Fascism - Mussolini
The Way of Men - Donovan
Meditations - Aurelius
Seven Pillars of Wisdom - Lawrence
Western Civilization Bites Back - Bowden

Fiction:
Roverandom - Tolkein
The Sound of Waves - Mishima
The Old Man and the Sea - Hemingway
The Idiot - Dostoevsky
>>
>>38440002

like I said

>I haven't read the book

this is what I've learned myself and have picked up tips&tricks from everywhere regarding addiction, because I find it fascinating.

however, you always have automated thoughts in your head running. Most of the time your not even aware of it. Your own self-talk (as they call it).

I would like to guide you in the way of

>Negative Thought Patterns and Cognitive Therapy

it's much written about it in psycholgy and you'll find a vast amount of it everywhere on google and whatnot.

>comes down to pure willpower

He literally goes on and on about how using willpower to quit will cause you to fail

It's about getting through whatever physical withdrawal symptoms you have, then understanding that you aren't missing anything. The book is pretty much entirely about smoking, since it goes into specifics of why smoking is stupid and how great it is to quit. But I guess the general principles of it would work for any habit or addiction. There's a reason he also wrote books about drinking and being fat

I never thought nicotine addiction was that bad. I dipped a half tin of chew a day for close to 3 years, then noticed my teeth were getting yellow and my gums were receding so I said fuck that and stopped. I obviously wanted one out of habit but after a couple days I totally forgot about it. Maybe cigarettes are different, but doesn't dip have more nicotine anyway?

>>
>>38440002
I haven't read the book but I can tell you some things that helped me quit:

Realising addiction is a bad excuse. That I choose to smoke even if I do it habitually.

Realising that even thinking 'don't smoke' is still thinking about smoking. The best way of thinking about it is not to think about it at all, or try to stop yourself from thinking about it even negatively.

Realising that every cigarette I didn't smoke was good for me, rather than seeing it as every cigarette I smoke as back to square one.

Realising what I would think to myself to convince myself to have a cigarette, and then stopping myself from thinking those thoughts.

It took me about a year to quit. Though it's not that simple. It's a learning process, during that year there were points where I had given up and was a full time smoker again, but eventually it got to the point where I would stop giving up. A lot of it is about focusing on the positives, so rather than saying 'oh I failed again' I would motivate myself by saying 'hey, remember that time I went two months without smoking? Clearly I know how to do this'.

Also, there's a distinction between chemical addiction and habit. To this day I still smoke every now and then, but I never let it go on long enough to develop it into a habit, so it's been eighteen months and I haven't become a regular smoker again and have managed to keep it to the occasional indulgence.

anyway. there IS certain point you can raise your skills, as woman you can go up to kg bench press, unless you're born with some specific anomaly, as potat... down syndrome victim, you CAN'T raise your IQ above certain range, no matter how hard you train. You have no evidence that "innate talent" is something your born with. You used powerlifting as an example. Powerlifting is a strength sport and if you werent such a dipshit you would know the difference between skills and strength. Furthermore, iq has very little to do with talent. Indont know why you used iq's stability over a lifetime with a bunch of skills that anyone can learn and master. The book in the original post cites tons of studies that break down what real world class performers actually do differently from the merely average performer. Iits flabbergasting how you come up with the weakest arguments for an idea that is so wrong and yet you continue to argue as if you have ever read anything on htis subject before. Please stop spouting pop opinions and using horribly off topic connections that frankly make you look alike an idiot.

I recently read some old horror stories, courtesy of some guy in the Bloodborne general /vg/ (pic related) when I got it in my mind to see what the whole Cthulhu meme was about.
I have to say, I'm prone to agree with him too; M.R. James wrote some crazy good stuff.
As for Lovecraft, I actually found Call of Cthulhu to be a bit overhyped, but might be the books written to expand on the Cthulhu mythos make it stand out better. I really liked The Colour out of Space. However, these are all pretty good stories, and as a non-native English speaker, it was fun to expand my vocabulary with the new (Or rather, old) words I found in them.

On a less positive note, I read Stephen King's It, and was massively underwhelmed, and did not care very much for the writing at all. The only thing I found that really stood out was the way he describes childhood obesity in one of the characters, even though that too basically turns into a generic sob story. I wouldn't discredit King enitrely, as I really enjoyed the Dark Tower series and a few of his other books I've read, but the titles slip my mind.

In lifting, I really enjoyed reading Wendler's thoughts on training in his book about the 5/3/1 training program, which really looks interesting.

>You have no evidence that "innate talent" is something your born with

You have to be some kind of mongoloid imbecile to doubt it. Are you trying to imply that everyone is born equal? Like, mind is a blank card and can be filled with anything, spawn of Einstein can be raised to the same IQ (you know, skill with solving riddles) as a son of average Bush voter? Or to the same math skill? Offspring of Beethoven can be trained the same way as your offspring?

Nope.

He even says will power is completely useless as it suggests addicts are missing out on some great pleasure by quitting.

The main point of the book is:
- smoking isn't actually that nice
- the relaxation of a cigarette is what non-smokers feel all the time (because they're not satiating an addiction which becomes unbearable every 1-2 hours)
- tell your self "isn't it nice not to be a smoker"

A lot more stuff but those were the 3 things that stuck with me.

well, certainly you are talentless when it comes to basic communication

you know, people are born with certain number of brain cells that can be applied for certain activities (i.e. controlling fingers or imagining music). This Number can be changed, but only at certain age. This is why some people are so good at some things and so bad at others, 4 cherrypicked studies with flawed interpretation can't change that.
>>
>>38454203
and now science:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4101876/

"deliberate practice accounted for 30% of the variance in music performance"

see, you can train piano for 30 years and still play like shit, because you do not have this part of your brain developed - it's like trying to run without legs. 70% of music performance is beyond practice. And if your performance is 1% worse than your oponent, you are worthless in this field.
>>
>>38453787
>Falling for the "hard work and dedication" meme

You will never be as good as someone with significantly more innate tallent , in most fields, no matter how hard you try. You are either under 15 or have never been in a situation where you work really hard for something and watch someone effrotlessly be 5x better than you if you cant accept this fact.
>>
>>38454651
>innate tallent
guess this is the concept he disagrees with - and he is partially right

experiments with twins shows that "only" 25% of performance is affected by talent. His false conclusion is "75% is my hard work" - no, 75% is mostly exposure during early years.

75% of children who started piano lessons at age 4 develop "perfect pitch", while only 3% of children who started at age 9 can develop it.

call it innate talent. call it early years practice, doesn't matter.
>>
>>38454651
>or have never been in a situation where you work really hard for something and watch someone effrotlessly be 5x better than you

and I remember my guitar lessons - took me 2 fucking months to barely learn this song, I was really proud of myself, "yeah, hard work pays", then this girl took guitar first time in her life and was able to play it after 3 hours. Somehow I CAN'T get the concept of fingerboard, while I have no problems with piano.

Probably not what most people have in mind for these threads - it seems like philosophy and self-help are the most popular genres - but I'd really recommend the Flashman series.

Only marginally /fit/ related, in the sense that he's muscular and horny. Basically, a cowardly asshole English gentleman travels around the world during the Victorian era, getting involved in wars and fucking foreign qt's. 10/10.

Most of them are fucking shit because all of the authors are far too liberal to actually write something dystopian. Also they are all complete retards when it comes to scale. ADB is the worst offender.

Some of the WHFB books are good though.

A few minutes in bed before falling asleep, lazy Sundays while chilling on the couch with a half gallon jug of water, on longer trips (plane or ferry), while waiting for something...

A paperback takes up less space than a hardcover, a Kindle (or other e-reader) takes up even less, and in a pinch, you most likely have your phone with you. I wouldn't recommend reading on your phone as a steady thing, though - the smaller screen makes it hard to focus, and this is coming from someone who has a Nexus 6. I have my Kindle in my bag or in my car in case I need to kill some time.

As a last top: If a book can't hold your attention long enough for you to enjoy it after a little while and you don't have to read it (type school textbooks), you might as well just put it down instead of going through a book you don't even like.

Books you don't like, but have to read, you can feed into a speed reader (I think Spreed is a thing?) and blaze through them while sitting at your computer.

Audio books, as another anon mentioned, could also be for you. You can actually find a good number of them on Spotify, believe it or not. One of my mates listened through Moby Dick in a day earlier this year while we worked in a fish processing plant.
