While the avatar is a human in many applications, it can also be non-anthropomorphic. In this case, interfacing the perceptual systems becomes a challenging task. In this study, three alternative methods for interfacing will be presented, namely abstraction, direct interfacing and analogy. The main focus of this study, analogy, is the case in which data from a perceptual system of the avatar is processed and interfaced with another perceptual system of the user. While designing this analogy, either self-identification or task performance can be prioritized. The design decisions regarding these prioritizations are discussed and the proposed hypotheses are tested with experiments in which an antennary perceptual system is interfaced through visual and haptic senses.
