Didn't HAVE to buy a shitload of fresh fruit.

Eating cheaply AND healthily means learning to shop and bargain hunting.

Fresh fruits and veggies are expensive for a reason. Costs far more to keep fresh.

She isn't, actually. I could get all of that (minus those shitty salted and oiled peanuts and a single bottle of water) for about $15, and that's pushing it. But I have to agree on one thing, food, the good kind, is actually quite expensive in 'merica. When I was in India food was really fucking cheap and I could buy 6 months worth of food for what I would spend on a months worth back home. The only things the were expensive there were exotic fruits (at least to the pajeets) like Passion fruit, green apples basically stuff that's common back home

mcd doesn't even keep you feeling full, I can eat 4 double cheeseburgers (1800 kcal) and I'm hungry within 2 hours when 500kcal of chicken and rice keeps me feeling well fed for longer. I don't understand what they do to their food to make it such shitty fuel

I am not american but I am obese. I have salads to every meal and only drink diet sodas. I probably eat healthier than most people on 4chan. Trust me it's fucking expensive. If you look at price per calorie eating junkfood is way more efficient. In the end it doesn't really make a difference, because everyone has different metabolisms any ways.
Some of us has no choice, we are just naturally husky. I've been to the doctor and have asked for advice. I am 174cm and weigh 138kg, my doctor told me it could be dangerous for me to lose weight. That this is my natural weight. It's not my fault that I store a little bit more fat than the norm and can't afford high quality food.
>>
Thats not bare essentials and shit on sale though is it.

Pasta is almost always on sale, tomato in the can is cheap. Tortillas are basically bread, salsa is high in nutrients and cheap. eggs are cheap. fruit is always on sale or in season, as are vegetables.

No one shops with $32 anyways. She just bought some arbitrary shit, nutritionally $32 of fast food is nothing but it'll keep you alive with 0 effort as people like her would like to live by.

>>38344853
No, in fact food prices in the U.S. are all around some of the cheapest in the developed world. The thing is fruit prices vary wildly by season, off the top of my head I know that at my store a box of raspberries like that would probably be around $1.50 in season and $3 or 4$ out of season. More popular fruits have less of a variable, for example bananas are nearly always under $1 lb.

If I had to guess she probably bought the fruit when it was at a high price. When I did my biggest cut I was a poorfag, so I lived almost entirely on raw chicken breast, which is around $2lb year round, and whatever greens were on sale.

You are fucking up to the point that I have to assume this is bait. Feel free to elaborate on what else you eat though, I'm not trying to bully you I just want you to find a way to be able to afford a healthy diet.

Anyway, anyone who really is having trouble eating on a budget: Learn to cook god DAMN it.

Start eating chicken livers. They are dense with nutrients and cheap as dirt.

Buy rice in bulk. Nothing is better than having a giant bag of rice on hand for when you are lacking the funds to get better food. Probably not great advice for fatties, I'm talking to starving skellies here who are actually poor.

Make pickled vegetables. This will extend the life of your vegetables when you buy too many, and it's a super easy way to add flavor to plain dishes (e.g., a bowl of rice)

Get a rice cooker or a crock pot. This will cut down on your effort and time spent on cooking.

Make some bone broth in your crock pot. this is another cheap as fuck nutritional goldmine. You can buy all the bones and shitty parts of the animal that nobody buys and make a super nutritious tasty broth that you can use in plenty of other dishes.

Cabbage is a gift from god, it can stay fresh for ages and can be made into tons of different dishes. adds crunch when raw, makes great pickles, can be a wrap if you stuff it with meat/rice and boil it, etc.

Hibiscus flower is nature's kool aid, if you really cant ditch sweet drinks then get some of it; you should be able to find it for cheap at a mexican grocery store. if your enot near mexico i have no idea where you'd find this for cheap however.

in general, "ethnic" stores should be your go-to for spices and such.

anyway this turned into a rant. I just get mad when people say eating healthy is expensive. no it's not, t. formerly hungry poorfag who really knows

You buy whatever fruits are cheapest per season, that's how you don't pay a shit ton.
Yes you are right though, apples are generally dirt cheap.
I'm partial to strawberries for smoothies myself since it's summer. I can get a fuckton for next to nothing (think a box that last me a week is like 3 dollars)
>>
I live in Romania
I eat fruit based in the season
If I want to buy grapes in the middle of summer it's going to be expensive
If I buy in autumn when grapes are joocy and done,it's going to be very cheap
I can buy in bulk no problem. (2 pounds would cost me aprox 1,5/2$)
The same applies to other fruits

Fuck her, and fuck everyone who has access to the Internet and uses it to complain about healthy food rather than studying food and health.

I started cooking when I was in college because I couldn't afford fast food.

A month of groceries cost me less than $200. Could have gone cheaper if I needed without too much trouble. 45 minutes of cooking every 2-3 days, make a bunch of leftovers.

My belief has been that fruit was sugar, it was just hard to overeat because of the fiber. You'd feel full from the fruit way before you've consumed too much of the sugar it had.
>>
>>38347784

>Nothing is clear

>some sources claim its unhealthy
>some say its healthy

Compare the sources though. The people who say fruit is healthy are basically every group of recognized experts who specialize in anything nutrition related. The contrarians are just random internet bloggers selling low-carb books and eating plans. There's no real controversy.

Sugar is a component of fruit, but as with many things in nutrition, the package is important. Just like whole wheat is healthier than refined, bleached flour, fruit is healthier than sugar. Take, for example, how it affects blood sugar levels. Sugar provokes an intense hyper, than hypo glycemic response from the body. Fruit provokes a much milder response. Fruit, in fact, can blunt the blood sugar response of eating white bread. That is, the blood sugar response of eating white bread is actually lessened when you eat it with fruit--even though you're eating more total sugar.
>>
>>38347884
Not really. Experts will say to eat fruit in moderation. Just like they say fast-food in moderation is a good idea for a healthy diet. No one disputes the benefits of the nutrients in fruit, but the value of those small amounts relative to the calories and sugar in fruit is very much in dispute.
>>
>>38347864

Fruit has sugar, but the things that are bad about sugar don't apply to fruit. Refined sugar is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and causes oxidative stress and inflammation. Fruit has fiber and phytochemicals that slow the absorption of sugars, and polyphenols with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties.

It's like oats compared to white bread. Both are starch, but the bad things that happen when you eat a baguette don't happen when you eat a bowl of oatmeal.

Eating healthy is expensive = I've never been poor.

Water is free and the healthiest thing to drink in any developed country
>But my city's tap water is bad because blablabla
Still better and cheaper than soda. If you think healthy food is expensive but can afford to drink soda all the time, fuck you. You don't know poverty.

Rice is incredibly cheap especially if you buy it in large quantity. A 10$ bag of rice can last me two weeks if I eat literally nothing other than rice. That's 70 cents a day, and I'm feeling FULL after eating it, not starving myself. Obviously not the healthiest thing to do, but just to put in perspective how cheap it is.
Pasta is also pretty cheap and it's on sales all the time. Even the smallest bag of spaghetties I can buy (2$) will last me 4 meals.
The price of fruits and vegetables change depending on what's in season, and if you're actually trying to manage your budget carefully you'd look into those. Last week I got 10 ears of corn for 2$.

Where is the mysterious "cheap junkfood" fatfags keep talking about?
Drinking anything other than water is lost money. Water is free. It doesn't matter how cheap your soda is, why would I pay for for something I can legally get for free?
Pizza pockets are 5$ and won't even feed me for a day, how is that cheap?
I see fatfags going to the restaurant or ordering pizza... that's easily 10$ for a single meal, or 20$ for a pizza that lasts 2 days.
Don't even get me started on snacks and sweets. I can't even afford the damn things.

you can make a dozen homemade mcmuffins were wayyyyy cheaper than a dozen McDonald's made mcmuffins.

it's just you gotta use the shit you buy to
your advantage. if you buy a dozen eggs, you eat a dozen eggs over the course of a week and you've just had a weeks worth of breakfast or at least a portion of which for $1.99.

don't go buy fucking grapes when they are 5.99lb and out of season. or raspberries when they are 4.99 for 6oz.

I actually worked produce at a grocery chain so I know how most produce works and rn if people had any sense in shopping we sell pre cut fruit, and bowls of just berries at 24oz are only 5 dollars. the amount of strawberries alone is cheaper than buying just a pound of strawberries at 4.99 so you basically get another 6oz of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries for free.

anyway people are dumb and can't ration their food and figure out how to plan their meals so 8 dollars of chicken can be spread out over 4 days.
>>
>>38348555

thats not true though, you cant eat at the same cost and portion size based off of effective cost of the things you buy.

unprepared, unprocessed, somewhat workable food or storageable mass produced food (pasta, grains, etc) should alway be more cost effective and supplemented with sales and nutrient rich legumes/fruit when you can.

I had this photo pop up on my feed and I tried to discuss it with the poster

First I noted that with $32 I could buy either about 30lbs of in season peaches or 60lbs of bananas.
>I mean buying in season is definitely a smart option but there's no way it even comes close to "affordable" it's not exactly a secret that healthier foods cost more and cheaper, less healthy foods are definitely gonna stretch a budget

I mentioned that I myself do a healthy food budget of about $100 a month with my bf and detailed how we buy foods like rice or chicken in bulk

>bulk is cheaper per unit but not overall. yeah I can afford $10 for one steak but maybe I don't have $50 to buy 10 of them

I then replied well don't buy red meat such as steak
>It was just an example I'm not saying poor people are gonna be all buying steak that's a ridiculous asumption to make, I'm just explaining how even though bulk is cheaper per unit it's not necessarily affordable. But what do you do when you CAN'T afford the overall cost upfront that's what I'm trying to say

I replied that then you cut out soda and chips and noted how the image included a soda.
>I'M buying soda and chips but I'm fortunately not one of the people struggling with this. not everyone who is poor is buying straight junk food you can't just assume there are cheaper less nutritious things to cut out of a budget that's absolutely condescending

Then I replied that well you can buy 10lbs of potatoes for the cost of a big mac meal.

and she has now ignored me while another one of her friends has replied

>Thank you! Some people will never get it. As your friend is feeding two people there are people who's families are way bigger so I get it.

I really did try.

This woman wasn't trying to see if it could be affordable or not, she had already come to a conclusion and just wanted to prove it. You should've just stopped talking to her at that point since she had already decided what she wanted to hear and couldn't be convinced otherwise.

>Chicken on rice with homemade salsa:

>8EUR (including condiments, water, electricity/gas, detergent, amortization for kitchen and utensils.)

>Three BigMac combos:
>4050kcal, 93g of protons, 582g of carbs, 156g of fat (mostly saturated fat.)

Bitches who complain about the price of healthy food and go out to prove it always end up buying mostly exotic and off-season organic fruit, kobe beef and salmon or shit like that.

The person did have a point though. Poor people actually spend more money buying cheaper crappier things than more expensive things that last longer and are cheaper in the long run.

Being poor is expensive. But I don't think food really applies to that. Not where I live and shop at least.

yeah there's a saying that goes pretty much "the poor can't afford cheap". but if anything I think that speaks FOR bulk food. it means if you're poor you have to make smart long term decisions. like buying food in bulk because in the long run it's more cost effective even if at the time of purchase it's more expensive than a single meal.
>>
>>38350017
Well in that case she would have meant the opposite

Crappy things are cheaper per unit but not overall, bulk is more expensive per unit but cheaper overall.

The one thing about living in Bakersfield is that fresh fruits, veggies, and meats are pretty cheap. Fast food really isn't that cheap anymore. Yeah, but part of being poor is you don't have money to invest. If you've got 30 for food for the week, you can't spend 24 of it buying a big thing of flour, no matter how good the price.

The fuck you buying bottled water for?

You know they just get it from the tap or worse, right? They even don't have to meet water quality standards that the civic tap water does. Then, you throw out plastic or use further resources to recycle it, making the problem worse. And it costs money you don't have to spend.

Get a filter if you find it hard.

White grapes are the shittest tier fruit. Basically sugar water ovoids.

Finally, where the fuck do you shop, the Moon? Nunavut maybe? You paid way too much. That'd run about $14-$15, Canadian (< $12 US) in the expensive part of my town, in this season.

32 dollars, what the hell?

my monthly budget is 75 fucking $$ and i eat 3500+kcal a day
>>
>>38350251
30 for food is 6 bucks a day. that doesn't get you enough mcdonalds to live on.
also you don't need to buy 100lbs straight away to get the benefit of buying in bulk. a large bag of rice is only a few dollars. beans the same, as are oats and eggs and potatoes etc. you can get meals for a week (though lacking in micronutrients but so is mcd) for $10

the other thing is even poor people tend to get their money in chunks. whether it's a small paycheck or welfare money it's usually paid once a month or 2 weeks. enough money to live on fast food for the next 2-4 weeks is considerably more than you need as an initial "investment" to buying bulk
>>
>>38350251
Then don't buy flour. This is anecdotal but my market has 2 lbs rice for $3, sometimes 1lb for $1. Deli area sells chicken for $3 a pound. You could just buy a half pound. Kale for $1. Get some oatmeal for like $4, which should last you the entire week.

It just won't be as fun and tasty as fast food though. Probably not a comfort food. I'm not even poor and eat nothing but chicken, rice, veggies, and it gets pretty depressing to me.

The thing is that she bought fruit. Of course fruit is expensive!

You CAN est healthy cheap as dirt. You have to find the staple foods that are cheap as fuck.

Of course it depends in geograhy too. Here in Canada it's not cheap like in us.

Let's look at what I usually get over a month.

Eggs(30 pack 4 times a month) $62
Red kidney Beans cabbed $35
Frozen veggies - $30
Other random shit like spinach - $30

So that's like $120 or something. Even if I went over by 30 that's $150.

Oh ane I buy $80 of omega3 oil per month. But that's expensive. It's not a regular thing most people want.

Fruits and vegetables both contain various vitamins and minerals. Vegetables have some fiber and less sugar. That's pretty much the only distinction.
Both can be done away with with a simple multivitamin and fiber capsule anyway

Because they need to justify buying shit. Do you know how many people nowadays don't know how to shop for groceries? It's so fucking weird when you're in college and no one knows how to shop let alone has anything in their pantries.

>in morning hear something being cooked in kitchen
>she's making eggs, bacon, salmon fillet, and sweetpotato hasbrowns for us
>"ANON YOU HAVE SO MUCH FOOD!"
>afterwards she begins to try to worm her way to "sleep," over all the time at my place

She literally tried making everything I had that night because she wasn't use to having food in her fridge. She tried making chicken breast, porkchops, steak , and broc/cheese saying we shouldn't waste food.

Making them significantly healthier. The average person living in a western country consumes entirely too much sugar.

>That's pretty much the only distinction.

No, not really, but even if that were the only distinction, it's a pretty damn big one.

>Both can be done away with with a simple multivitamin and fiber capsule anyway
Yeah, not really. You can't replace vitamins in food with a multivitamin. Studies have shown over and over that getting your vitamins from a pill just isn't as effective.
>>
>>38344684

> Buying fruit

Beens, rice, starches are all cheap as fuck. Oh and they are easy to grow.

If you really needed to you could probably live on like $25 a week and still have a very healthy diet.
>>
>>38350723
/r/eatcheapandhealthy is better.
>>
>>38352332

Vitamins and minerals are hardly the reason why fruits and veggies are important. Phytochemicals in fruit and veg are what keep you healthy, and they can't be replaced with a multivitamin. Fiber pills also don't come with the same benefits as vegetable/fruit fiber.

>The average person living in a western country consumes entirely too much sugar.

Too much refined sugar, yes. But not nearly enough fruit. If you think the sugar present in whole fruits causes health problems, just link me to the study you're basing your beliefs on. The World Health Organization has said that there's no evidence of fruit sugar being harmful.

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2015/sugar-guideline/en/

>The WHO guideline does not refer to the sugars in fresh fruits and vegetables, and sugars naturally present in milk, because there is no reported evidence of adverse effects of consuming these sugars.

The more varieties of plants you eat, the wider the variety of phytochemicals you take in. Fruits and vegetables have unique phytochemicals between them, as do individual fruits and vegetables from each other. You should at least try to get some berries in your diet.
