The point of nationalism was to centralise authority in the king and reduce the power of the nobility.
Under feudalism, the nobles had their own land where they could do whatever they wanted, more or less, as long as they fulfilled the tithe to their liege. Nationalism changed that and made people identify as part of a nation, rather than part of a city/town/village/tribe.
It's pretty much the opposite of wanting to make your own nation.
