I read it, and found it fairly meh. What am I really supposed to gain from it? Machiavelli wrote what he did in The Prince because of how fucked the political situation was in Italy at the time. I am not a renaissance Italian prince. It's not even like Machiavelli preached these as a universal guide, he loved a bit of Roman republicanism.

If you want to actually find out who you are, what you are, what you're made of, your worth, then the only path to that is lived experience, and the only philosophers that can help you with that would be the faggots that associated themselves with existentialism. Personally, Nietzsche's works should be read first and at least once. Go for the most popular and short ones, like that one compilation of Antichrist and Ecce Homo. When it comes to Nietzsche, they're usually popular for a reason.

I was skeptical at first and still am because it's always a good idea to take things with a grain of salt. Books like these contain great wisdom that can either entertain you or completely change your perception. I'd invite you all to at least try one book that has your attention.

Imagine you're explaining something you just learned about to a group, in the hope that you're being interesting, I mean, it feels good when people think you said something smart, right? Then imagine someone slides in with "well, actually...".

It doesn't matter if they're right or not - you've gone from feeling interesting to feeling foolish and probably defensive. The goal is to make friends and make people like you - therefore pointlessly correcting people in social settings is counterproductive.

I'm not sure what you mean by "doesn't teach you to be a leader". People gravitate to the warm, friendly people who make you feel good, that's the kind of person the book teaches you to be.

It sounds like you have some social issues that could be addressed re-reading the book.

It's not completely shit but the advice seems geared towards people who already have bargaining power but tend to come across as too cold and impersonal. It's of less use to somebody with very little power and influence who wants to work their way up the ladder - being affable isn't in itself all you need to get ahead.

By all means read the book and put it into practice but realise that its not a complete method. There are times where you'll have to intimidate people, or cut them down to size, or go against the grain. But if you're the kind of person who seems to attract conflict then this book could be worth a read.

This isn't just "common sense advice any 12 year old" could figure out, the principles from The Art of War have been employed by numerous generals in war with great succes, if it would be easy to figure out these principles, why did other generals fall for the ploys found in the book? There must obviously be more to it than initally thought - what seems obvious often is overlooked in daily life. Maybe that is why Clausewitz' On War actually have a lot of the same principles as The Art of War? Maybe it is because there is a lot of timeless truth in The Art of War.

To be fair I don't think you give the book the credit it deserves because you want to come off as "well-read".

I'm really into the whole counterculture movement and psychedelic shit even though I've never done drugs in my life and don't plan on it. I don't know why it's so appealing but it is.
About to finish Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." I might read Tom Wolfe's "Electric Kool Aid Acid Test" to explore the psychedelic movement in the east.

opinions op 48 Laws of Power? I stopped after about 40 laws, many of them just didn't seem aplicable in real life, and most of the stories are very cherry picked. also some laws contradict each other.

This. I was interested in military history and strategy a couple years ago so I read it. Same way that three years ago I was in to political philosophy and read the Prince. Neither is good or applicable in the 21st century (it's pretty commonly believed that the Prince purposely contains bad advice since Machiavelli had lost his power to the Medici and wanted to see them fail). On that note, the Republic is probably the best book on that subject matter for this thread since it uses a city as allegory for oneself and their mindset.
