I saw a tip from some SS coach that pullups (well, actually chinups in that case) respond well to doing them frequently, but not to failure. based on personal experience it makes sense.

This. Do supersets to one or 2 before failure, rest, and then repeat a shit load of times. I would play Dark Swoles and every time I died I did 10 pull ups. Ended up doing 300+. Went from 17 pull up max to 28

negatives are good. you could also try doing an extra set or two with all sets at 8 reps rather than to failure at 10 reps. or even possibly doing some higher reps on the assisted pull-up machine, though not with much assisted weight
