So I was correct

a "natural" monopoly

isnt "natural" in the sense that it just happened that way cause reasons

its called that because it would be the natural tendency of the market to want to have a monopoly cause it yeilds the lowest prices

this is true in the cases of things like water companies, electricity companies and telephone/internet providers where it gets cheaper to expand business as more and more people join

as in

its really expensive to hook up the first person to a waterline cause you have to build the whole plant and then pipe it to their house

but after that it just becomes cheaper and cheaper and cheaper into infinity and this actually makes it so that for the lowest costs in a given market it is better for one company to hook up everyone because its overall cheaper that way

these types of situations are regulated by subsidy and price fixing because government wants everyone in a given market to have access to the service and that would imply in almost every scenario that the price has to be lower than the suggested selling price based upon equating marginal cost and marginal revenue, ie the company would make losses without subsidy OR raising prices to a profitable level, but if they didnt regulate them the monopoly, acting as monopolies do would have increased prices too much

so tldr

like I suspected you're an uneducated hick libertarian who has never taken so much as a basic econ class and bases his opinions off of /pol/

eat shit faggot

>then that's not ok
Yea that's true, but the political system is set up for the good of the parties and not the people. Gary Johnson may show up at a debate this year, but I doubt it (cable channels won't want him) because trump and Hillary are so unpopular. That would add some new ideas, or at least legetimize a third party a bit.

At this rate in order to introduce more options over the long term one of the parties needs to break, but even if trump loses that probably wont happen.

this isn't about the naturalistic fallacy, son. it's about the idea that there can be only one because nature automatically excludes competitors.
>>
>>37995542
kys
>>
>>37995429
Less painful and less risk of arthritis to do mixed grip, but the supinated hand, if not kept in check, can cause the bar to swing out from you. Mixed has a risk of bicep tears, but you can minimize it but not cranking the supinated hand under the barbell, not bending the elbow of the supinated hand, and doing bicep work so your biceps can handle load. With hook, it hurts like a bitch until you get used to it, and you're risking thumb arthritis, but not much bicep tear risk at all. You also can't do it all the time, so you'll be working with straps more.

>>37995519
Whichever feels more comfortable. I'm right handed and supinate my left hand, but I'm more the exception than the rule.
>>
>>37995519
both is good. not at the same time, obviously. alternate when training for balance.

compete with whichever feels better.
>>
>>37995544

You're supposed to have the bar be over the midfoot, whichever angle that puts your torso at, whenever you squat, whichever style you are squatting. By a little bit, I mean his hips are still rising before his torso, but not nearly as bad as they previously did.

>I have my own definition of natural that is tied directly to muh "free" market economics and I expect that everyone else shares that definition.

Monopoly in a free market is totally natural. Gain dominance, rework the rules in your favor, force out competition. "Natural" monopoly as detailed by PJ and c/p'd a dozen times in this thread is also inevitable. Like do you seriously think having a dozen utility companies for one town is feasible or reasonable?
>>
>>37995581
No.

"Monopoly" and "natural" have specific economic definitions here, both of which you misused. You should look them up before jumping into this discussion.

PJ understands them. You do not. Unfortunately you're both idiots.

>>
>>37995581
>Monopoly in a free market is totally natural

funny cause monopoly is listed as one of the classic "market failures" due to the fact that establishment of a monopoly makes the market cease to be a free market due to the very fucking definition of a free market
>>
>/fit/ - Markets and Marxism
>>
>>37995634
Which is what makes the term a senseless contradiction. A free market is a train headed towards a concrete wall.
>>
>>37995634
>PJ doesn't know what "free market" means

That explains a lot. This isn't a case of "communism wasn't true communisim because it didn't bring about a classless, post scarcity society"

The one I have is prices determined by unrestricted competition. Unless you're admitting that a government has to form to create a monopoly...

Note also that this is not the same as "government is a sufficient condition to create a monopoly..."
>>
>>37995525
Bacon and chicken? Looks yummy as fuck.
>>
Every society is a libertarian society that chose to create a state
>>
>>37995646
which is exactly why you dont have free markets cause they dont work

any sensible country has regulated markets to prevent market failures

>>37995671
a free market only occurs in a scenario where an infinite amount of infinitely small companies, sell homogeneous products at the price where the cost of production matches the sale price

that never happens

so there is no real free market either

just various forms of slightly less "free market"(using that word lightly), markets

black markets are free markets. they just tend to get their courts shut down now and then by racketeering regs...

youre also confusing perfect competition with unrestricted competition. it's generally agreed that to create the conditions of perfect competition the market has to be regulated and that this is an alleged function of government.

>>37996076

Was it white, brown, or wild rice? Brown and wild rice take 35-45 minutes, white rice takes 20-25 minutes. It's good to let rice stand, no matter what kind it is for 10 minutes after you cook it. Some wild rice varieties are mushy and shit when they get cooked. As long as it isn't hard in the middle and all the water is gone it is cooked.

>>37996091

You don't NEED to wash rice before you cook it, but it helps make it not so sticky. To do it, put it in a clear glass, run water over it, and drain it until the water runs clear.

Consensus so far is simply personal preference (and what you can handle without pain).

I've spent days pondering about this and rechecking the papers I have on biomechanics...
But we still don't have enough info on the studies available to make a good purely mechanical analysis of it (for example, we have no papers on moment arms at the shoulder joint when the shoulder if under hyperextension, which is a fundamental piece of the bench press puzzle).
I'm gonna be writing something (boring) on the bench biomechanics soon. Nuckols has a good detailed article on it but it's missing some important pieces.

In any case, when purely analysing the competitors, max grip seems to be the prefered for most above the 83 class.

There are some exceptions, though, including WR-tier exceptions like vid related. And for a more extreme example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oagvWitc0_I

But the japanese guys are specially into max gripping, even at the lower weight classes (daiki and yusuke are 74kg).

Drunk fag here.
That's a statue of Caracalla.

He's famous for two things.
The first and most important is extending Roman citizenship to everyone in the Empire.
Previously, it used to be a sacred right only reserved to the truly respectable.
He extended it everyone so he could tax everyone at citizen rates (which is high).

The reason for that is that he maintained super high pay for the military.

His father said to him "Be harmonious with your brother, enrich the soldiers and scorn all other men".

Caracalla killed his brother but he followed his father's second rule. He enriched the military and scorned all other men, thus hastening the fall of the Western Empire.

Caracalla's modern name is a nickname given to him his troops by way of his penchant to wearing a gaullic cloak of the same name.

His real name was the same as his father, Septemius Severus with some shit added on that no one remembers.
His nickname remains.

The same with Caligula. His real name was Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus.
But since his father gave him a little legionary outfit when he was a boy, the troops named him "Caligula" after his little "Caliga", which were the boots that legionaries wore.
So we call him "Little Boots" today, after the little outfit that his father, Germanicus, made him wear as a boy 2000 years ago.

I'm so full of this useless fucking shit that it spews out whenever I'm drunk.

There is honestly nothing worse than people who have never touched a barbell in their life claiming they can lift x amount

I got pretty triggered by a similar statement on Saturday night and I'm still mad about it now, rather I put it out of my mind until last night but now I just can't stop thinking about it

The ignorance, the naïveté, I don't have a problem with either but don't speak about that which you know absolutely nothing about
>>
>>37997495
I'd do 130 again and wait longer between sets, yeah. 135 will be there waiting for you patiently. no need to rush it when you didn't get your reps the first time.

remember to keep the goal the goal. follow the program.

Currently rebuilding the strength I lost losing 125 pounds, though I'm in this for the long haul so I don't mind setting back OHP progression by a session.

The thing with daily linear progression is if you try to push it too far you'll waste time that could be better spent on a weekly LP
>>
>>37997656

If you're looking for forearm vascularity, get yourself a wrist roller.

Just a week has got veins and definition popping. 6x3 at the end of the session, alternating between working your flexors and extensors.
>>
>>37997672
You could just do wrist curls
>>
>>37997662

I don't think I'm there yet.

I started training in September, progression till March looked like:

>Press: 45 → 170
>Bench: 85 → 220
>Squat: 85 → 270
>Deadlift: 135 → 370

At the same time, I started at 375 pounds BW after dealing with some horrendous injuries and serious depression, so I've been cutting massively all the while.

Toward the end of March I caught the flu, and between training 4 times a week on CLP/dropping the weight/working 14 hour days I got a nasty case of bronchitis which put me completely out of commission for 3 weeks. I dropped even more weight like mad but when I came out of it I lost the vast majority of my strength.

Just finished this phase of my diet a few weeks ago. Dropped down to 220 pounds and I've been running SS on maintenance/a slight surplus ever since.

Current working weight is 130/160/195/260. I've still got a ways to go to rebuild what I lost, but lifting without being on a deficit has been a joy so far.

Really wouldn't mind taking it as slow as possible and milking this LP for all I can.

I think I'll just give 130 another go on the press - no sense in rushing it now and then stalling out a few weeks later.
>>
>>37997736
Okay good call

I bulked up from 180 to 220 on SL and finished up with a working weight on the squat of 365 so you I'd say even though daily LP ends at different points for everyone you've still got a little ways to go
>>
>>37995313
setting the weight down properly is part of the lift, he only accomplished half of what he thinks he did.
>>
>>37997736
There's no 'magical' gains you get from slowing down an lp when you dont need to. The whole point is that, as a novice, your recovery outpaces your ability to damage your tissues. Holding back wont help you unless you very clearly wont be able to make the weight on another attempt. Then you do a small deload and try again, hoping that it was fatigue building up that caused a miss. If it wasnt fatigue (as ruled out by the deload), then congratulations youve exited the novice stage and need weekly or more periodization on your lifts.

If youre confident you can make the weight next session, with good form, do so. Slowing down is pointless, the only time you advise someone to do that is when theyre making unsustainable jumps in weights.

>>
>>37997955
You could at least keep your hands on the bar until it reaches the ground

IPF changed from their stupid controlled descent shit to you just have to keep your hands on the bar while dropping it
>>
>>37997894

Thanks for the insight, brother. While I hit 135 they were pretty nasty reps - you know the kind, fueled by anger with loose form. Definitely should give 130 another go in retrospect - I was only resting 2 minutes between sets, and while that's more than enough for squats and deads, it seems like bench and press are going to need a little more loving.

I figure I'll continue eating at maintenance until I stall out, then up calories by 200-300 daily and stick with LP until I stall out again. IIRC SS has you deload thrice before switching over to TM? I'll have to re-read the book - it's been a while.

I was worried I'd have trouble managing maintenance, but honestly it's difficult to eat even that much. I have no idea how I was putting away 10,000 calories some days at my worst.

>>37997842

Glad to hear it, here's hoping I can go the distance this time.

What did you switch over to after you exhausted those noob gains?
>>
>>37997955
it's still part of actually doing the lift...so really, the record shouldn't be as high as it is because the record should include coming down with the weight as well.
>>
>>37997989

There's never been a speed requirement for the descent in any lift. Not for deadlifting, not for squatting, not for benching. You just have to be in contact with the bar. Nothing more, nothing less.

>you and your friends are older now

American politics have become a spectacle by design over the last decade. Look at the clown fiesta that is the upcoming election - They're not even trying anymore.

I believe that it's mostly because people are a lot more divided now then they were 5 years ago (rather the perception is that they are; this perception doesn't match reality unless you're talking about extremists from both ends of the spectrum) mostly thanks to the media which constantly pushes things like race and class because that's what drives ratings
People want to hear about conflict and tension not everyone getting along happily so they sow seeds of divisiveness with their reporting, it's not that they're intentionally trying to divide people it's just what happens when there's a constant bombardment of "us against them"

All your friends grew up and became more politically aware and active.

Nothing to do with pol
>>
>>37998242

It wouldn't even need to be that.

Thanks to FB (and social media more generally) you've got a lot of what would previously have been one-to-one conversations taking place out where anyone can see them and stick their oar in. And so you get a lot of people saying or discussing things they wouldn't consider good 'public' topics offline and doing it in full view of everyone.

They'll grow out of it once they reach their 30s and realise that, barring some sort of insane despot coming to power, nothing will change in their day to day life regardless of whether it's a Tory or a Trot in power

"Politics is Hollywood for ugly people" is as true a statement as it gets

How hard would it be to pick up an average car? This guy did it with a pretty crappy lighter car, but what about the typical car in America?

Like one of these, would be great if you could just lift them out of the way.

people like you make a good argument for downsides of democracy

It's fairly difficult. The biggest problem is usually getting the right grip but its not exactly a light weight once you've managed that.

Political activism is for people with egos too big for their own good, and ideologues who are naïve to human nature

thoughts on running smolov jr indefinitely and simultaneously for squat and bench?
as in instead of running it as a 3 week peaking program just keep going until stalling and then deloading as you would do in any other program
obviously i would have to start with lower percentages than prescribed and limit the increases to only 5 lbs per week but i don't mind if i can make it work in the long run

>>

a lot will happen because trump will bring exactly the change that liberals want. trump doesn't care about the world he'll let gays fuck in public once he's in power if it gets him more money somehow and the fact that he'll be so detached from things is exactly why he'll be a better leader than sanders

>hillary doesn't even count

desu don't do programs at all. learn to program for yourself if you need order. in the end it's just sets and reps
or
learn strength theory and learn to autoregulate if you just wanna get as big as possible on your own terms
