This depends on where you live and the specific circumstances of the fight. Where I am IF karate man instigates violence I'm allowed to kill him, police interview you (if that) and don't even take your gun for the conversation, let alone bring any kind of charges. Police are very pro civilians-with-firearms here.

Obviously, if you shoot karate man unprovoked different story.
