If your weight is higher and your total reps are the same, your volume is higher. As a broad generalization, 5x3 will be better than 3x5 for strength training purposes though, yes.

Not really a meaningful question without context imo. If you're in a volume block then doing fives and sixes might make more sense, and threes might be more appropriate in an intensity block. There's a place for both, and it depends on how your program is organised whether you use 3s, 5s, or both.

Isn't volume and tonnage the same thing? I've always thought that by its name, volume, it is three dimensional so it's sets x reps x load.

no it doesn't, for two reasons. First of all these things (rep ranges) work on a spectrum. the old beliefs that 8-12 reps are for "hypertrophy" and 1-3 are for "strength" are outdated.
The second reason is that becoming more neural efficient IS getting stronger. that's what getting stronger is after a certain point, when you can no longer build more muscle to cover up neural inefficiency.
2. you should probably mix up the reps and sets. Daily undulating periodization is very big lately, which would have you hitting things like 5x3, 3x5, and 4x4 all in the same week.
personally i prefer 5x3 for building strength though.

Thanks guys. I've got one more question - I've made a program for myself based somewhat off of TM and just what I've learned about my body. A simple overview of the program would be:

1. Squat/Bench volume
2. Rest
3. Deadlift/Bench volume
4. Rest
5. Rest
6. Squat/Bench intensity
7. Deadlift intensity

My question is: should I add a rest day between the two intensity days? I don't think I need as much time to recover if the volume is low. Thanks again!
