It's depressing how one-sided this discussion about promiscuity is. It seems like a lot of people are venting their sexual frustration by making flimsy arguments for chastity.

Srsly. Getting married before your mid-20's in the developed world is short-sighted. Getting married before your mid-20's if you're getting a bachelors degree is dumb. Beyond the risk of making a decision like that with little relationship experience, it greatly restricts what you can do with your life. Remember, young people also have much less relationship experience and therefore understand much less about their preferences and compatibilities. Having multiple mature long-term relationships before you get married is a huge win, and that isn't going to happen if you get married at 19, or probably even 22. People often change during those years, too.

The more educated and elite you are, and the younger you are, the more painful it's likely to be. I can't imagine having to deal with that coming out of a cosmopolitan liberal arts college. People immediately scatter across the world. Coming out of a good grad program in a long-term relationship would be very difficult too.

Right, but that one five-year relationship probably didn't start at 14 (or even 17), so that puts a limit on how early a healthy marriage usually starts.

I also think that having multiple quality long-term relationships before marriage is important - variety helps you figure out what you want. You should also be sure that you've settled into your personality and life priorities. That rarely happens before the mid-20's in developed countries.

This is coming from personal experience/seeing others in social circle

I've had many friends start out as high school sweethearts, and end up staying married 30+ years later. While they've had issues, they've also worked on their relationships and many of them say that while they wonder what it would have been dating others, it's more of a passing moment and they don't regret it at all.

I think the key thing is, is that it depends on the couple themselves. Mainly because a lot of my friends who have this long term relationships with their high school sweetheart tended to be much more mature when they were young, granted they were still teenagers but they treated relationships seriously and while they did change, they did change together and with each others support.

While the few friends I have that have had frequent breakups and long terms, tend to have various quirks that can make unsuitable for relationships, tend to shift blame to their SO, not as much mental maturity etc. Same can be said for the quality of people that they meet.

Also, I don't mean just one relationship. I feel like 1-3 long term relationships could be a good number for the general population. Anything a little more than that though can be worrying.
