Wat?
>>37812436
They are good in that they help to reduce the DNA damage done by free radical molecules/ ions within the body which can contribute to general aging and poor health.

Although the oxidative stress theory of cellular aging is no longer widely accepted it still plays a part in the newer DNA damage theory of cellular aging.

so its not just some vague herbalist term like toxins?

one of the best ones is cocoa

go to this websites, and scroll down to see its benefits. spoiler: they are pretty huge and well verified.

to add: looking at it myself again, it seems like its not that huge, but still 2% increase in bloodflow is neat.
>>
What's the most powerful supplement form of anti oxidants. Green tea extract? Is there even a way to measure this?
>>
>>37813269
No, they prevent free radicals from causing cellular damage
>>
>>37813269
No, a free radical is a type of particle or indeed a group of particles which is unstable due to uneven valence electrons. They steal or donate electrons to stabilize within the body creating more unstable particles. It is thought to play a large part in ageing and general health.

Anti-oxidants in supplement form don't work for the most part. Anti-oxidant compounds normally work synergistically with other compounds in a food, and isolating them hasn't shown to be good for health.

>Antioxidants stabilize highly reactive molecules known as free radicals. The body produces free radicals as part of its normal activity. They also derive from exposure to environmental factors, including tobacco, radiation and pollution. Free radicals are unstable and can create damage to our cells’ DNA that may lead to cancer and other health disorders.
>Substantial laboratory evidence shows antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. Studies of large populations usually show that people with diets high in foods that supply antioxidants develop less cancer than those whose diets focus on foods relatively low in antioxidants, such as meat, sweets and other refined carbohydrates. However, large-scale tests of individual antioxidant nutrients often show no effect on cancer risk or even increased risk among certain people.
>Antioxidant nutrients and phytochemicals may provide more protection when they work together, according to several studies. In one study of about 250 men, genetic differences strongly influenced whether the antioxidant lycopene protected against prostate cancer. The researchers found that men who consumed greater amounts of foods high in lycopene showed a 41 to 79 percent reduced risk of prostate cancer. Yet men who increased lycopene consumption and also ate the most foods high in beta-carotene and vitamin E had an even greater risk reduction.
>Foods that supply a wide range of antioxidants include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Since research now suggests many different antioxidants working together provide the most protection, aim for a diet that includes a variety of all these foods.

"There is little evidence in favour of supplementing antioxidants. Some antioxidants (NAC) may temporarily improve endurance (i.e. competition) but may have negative long-term effects on strength, hypertrophy, and recovery. Only athletes that are proven to be deficient in antioxidant vitamins should consider supplementation"
