Its a damn shame. Getting a degree is so expensive now and entry level jobs so often pay very little. How can anyone get away from that debt burden?

In some aspects I'm lucky, I got into a good union and only had a small debt when I quit school. Its damn dull work but when so many people I know finished school and are doing worse it makes me shy from quitting.

There is a lot that is great about the current era (like shitposting with you fools) but I wonder if I'd feel more fulfilled had I come of age a decade or two earlier.

I think it becomes more important to have practical skills, e.g. to be able to work with metals, other materials or electricity. And to have a practical understanding of and experience about mechanics etc. Uni/college pumps out more and more people who are good on one certain theoretical topic (talking about STEM here), but most can't do anything practical, so if they need to get something done apart from calculation, modelling or simulation they need a technician or worker who does the manual work for them.

Hell, in Tokyo I could rent a bedroom in a dormintory-type setup for $700 per month. Meanwhile such options didn't even exist in San Francisco, and at the time I was renting a 2br in a triplex in Oakland for $1400/mo.

That said, if you move to a medium-sized town in Idaho, you might be able to do what your mom did. I think a logical error that Millennials are making is to think that they should be able to afford housing in the *now desirable* areas that their parents bought in *when they were less desirable*.

When I left the CA Bay Area, I could have gotten a decent deal on a house in Hunters Point, a really shitty part of town. 15 years ago you could probably get a good deal in a run-down part of the Mission District of SF.

I have a friend who is an EE, but doesn't get to do anything cool.....mostly just software/programming stuff and some light testing (multimeter shit) that anybody could do. I graduated from Western Oregon University in 1998. I looked a few months ago, and the current in-state tuition is approximately in line with the relative increase in minimum wage.

I lived with my parents, worked full-time in the summer, and part time during the school year.

The question to ask yourself is this: is expensive private or out-of-state tuition worth the debt in terms of long-term earnings potential? Probably not.

Stay at home and go to a state school. Note: this advice does not apply to CA, where it went from effectively free in ~1970 to quite expensive in the 2010s.

Here's the thing I'm noticing as I get older: areas that were boring as fuck or scary often get much more livable with time. The current place I'm at was mind-numbingly dull when I moved here in 2009. But I think the recession pushed people out of the "cool" (i.e. expensive) spots, and they brought new life into the area. What used to be a honky-utopia of suburban dullards now has food trucks, interesting bars/pubs, yoga studios, and a wide variety of available activities.

I am/was in CA so unfortunately I graduated high school right around the tuition hike. California also has the misfortune of having so many very badly impacted colleges. You can go to state school for 6-7 years and graduate with little debt or go to Arizona state and graduate in 4. Some people will conclude that a little extra debt is worth it. On the longer completions: as it turns out many departments were requiring so many pre-reqs and gen-eds that were being offered every other year that it pushed the completion schedule from 4-6 years. When a mandatory class is offered every two years in fall everyone tries to get it all at once. Fucking stupid.

I think working through school should be encouraged. Though unfortunately many people can't live at home and attend school. if your parents are near big cities that's great, there are going to be schools nearby too. Unfortunately many have family homes in what *where* thriving communities that are now no longer well situated. Small towns definitely suffer, withut enough industry and no colleges nearby the kids have to leave. I don't think its that uncommon.

I had to take a bunch of tests as a formality but looking at all the other applicants in the room I knew they were wasting their time since they'd already decided they were going to hire me (I could do the job just fine, I met the hiring person at a volunteer activity that was practically the same job).

Here's something for you: the post-war era was where American RV culture came from. People lived in RVs because they could effectively be migrant labor. These days, RVs mean either old and wealthy or poor as shit. There's no middle ground of migrant RV-based workers. Consider the oil boom that we had over the last several years. People were paying a fortune to rent shoddily built apartments instead of living in their own RVs. This is mostly down to cultural shift, though obviously some portion is due to the energy inefficiency of RVs and the cold areas they would be needed.
