It's true at a uni level you the chinks, pakis, daves, tyrones, etc end up segregated from each other like U.S. prison, but once you make it past that to a graduate scheme at any of the big firms I found the segregation breaks down. Most people aren't very strong. That includes most of the people who go to the gym.

Despite /fit/'s rampant estatting, it's a community of people who take lifting seriously, and that means a higher concentration of people who can actually move daddy weight.

Even at 'serious' gyms, the number of people who can meet basic strength standards is a tiny fraction of the total membership. I've seen fewer than 5 people at my current gym squat more than 3pl8 (not counting the odd half-repper) and one of them is the owner. I've seen ONE other person deadlift 4pl8, not for reps (and that was with a belt after he tried and failed to do 4.5.) I've seen a couple with benches over 100kg, but generally with shitty technique. I've never seen anyone other than me OHP.

There's a powerlifting club operating out of the Durham amateur rowing club. Look them up on Facebook, I recommend lifting with them a bit.

I used to row for du so I've used the tank and the decent heavy weights room below. But other than that theres not a lot of good places to lift.

I signed up to JD for a month but the padded floor at the squat racks is an injury waiting to happen. Could easily fix the problem by putting some racks on their Oly platforms but they don't.

If you can get to it, I recommend the Fitness Factory in Binley. Great free weights section, four flat benches, incline/decline benches, two power racks and a dedicated squat rack. Only one Oly platform though. A little while back they moved all the cardio stuff upstairs and made the other downstairs room a dedicated machines area. Never really been in there but looks decent. Owned by a powerlifting guy and his two sons. £26pm for men. Free parking as well, if you drive.

Only thing I wish was better was the opening hours, open til half 9 on weekdays and 3 bong at the weekend.

I think with this brand it depends on the gym owner desu. Like my local one outside Newcastle has 1 squat rack, 1 power rack and platform, 1 bench and 2 extra barbells. It's definitely enough if you don't go during prime hours (like between 4-7pm when it's fucking hell on earth). 90% of people never touch them anyway.

Though today there was this retarded deadlift 40kg or 30kg for charity thing for which they stole one of the barbells and the only 10kg bumber plates. First time I've had to actually wait for a barbell to be able to deadlift.
