I've been actively trying to get better at squat for at least a year and a half and I still don't make it happen all the time. Sometimes you can feel exactly where it is over your foot and it's really easy to stay in that groove. Other days I just pitch forward no matter how long I take to warm up.

I squatted with the Hatfield bar (ssb) today and it actually felt really good. I think I had it a little high because it kind of felt uncomfortable on my neck.

Also I could see how that might make me less likely to learn how to brace my upper back properly. I definitely plan on doing SSB days any noncritical squatting sets/days

1-2 kinda heavy singles, then going into working sets. basic pyramid setup over the weeks.

Accessories. good mornings, bent over rows (with a bit of body English), Romanian deadlifts, pull-ups. Maybe power shrugs, maybe snatch grip deads. I dunno.

Accessories will just be some for a few, depending on how beat up I am.

Also, is there a big difference between, say, 3x8 and 8x3, when working in a high volume block, slowly tapering to lesser volume and high intensity?

The big difference between 8x3 and 3x8 is going to be the starting intensity (in most cases). If you can handle working at relatively high percentages for a long block then in theory it should work better because you'll get more time under heavy weight and more practice with first reps under heavier load. If you can't, and a lot of people are in this boat, expect all hell to break loose somewhere around week 5-6.

If you assume starting with a very light 8x3, almost speed work style, you won't get so beat up but you'll also lose some of the strength advantages.

Well, I'm back. Didn't go exactly as I hoped but I got some form issues squared away.

I got 2 squats on each of my 2 sets. Could have probably got 3 on the last one, decided to save it. Got all my bench reps, that's feeling great lately. Deadlift, I decided to get saucy and do a heavier single as a last warmup. I got a fast 545. Got 2 and 3 reps on 495, resetting after my first rep is f'n me up.

I've never had that problem. I've had it where the bar is more whippy because it's thinner, so what I hit in the gym doesn't translate to the meet.

So like I lift something ezpz in the gym, but then I try to pull 3lbs more on a stiff bar in a meet and can't get it off the ground.

I'd maybe consider bumping the percentages very slightly, depending on how strong you are to start with/how much rep work you've done recently.
