Unless your arms are freakishly long it's not possible.
The toe touch has three areas that are being stretched.
The l1-l4 section of your back(lower back), the upper portion of your arms and shoulders, and the hamstrings and groin.
If you were to keep your back straight due to arm length, it would only stretch your hamstrings.

Guy in op is doing it wrong. You should pivot from the hip with a straight back for maximum hamstring stretch (which is the point of a forward bend). I can put my palms on the ground with some slack in my elbows, but I can barely go halfway with proper form. There's very little to be gained by stressing the spine by rounding in a forward bend, it's mostly "cheating".

Depends on deep a stretch you want. Pretty early on you'll notice it's anatomically impossible to sink further down without bending your back, to the point that pic related is as much a lower back stretch as it is a hamstring stretch. It's not something you should sit in long, though, due to the pressure put on the back as mentioned.

i use contract/relax stretches for my hammies, then do some L-compression work for dat active flexibility, then i do toe touches as a lower back stretch and there ain't nothing wrong with that.

its effectiveness as a hammy stretch is limited by the inability of the body to fight the hamstrings in order to keep the back from rounding.

Flexibility can be learned and improved. However, there are limitations to some people. I do heavy yoga and pilates. Yet, I can sometimes not do a forward bend unless I warm-up to it. Finally, I hired a Phd educator and trainer. She told me the truth, for my impacted back. Yes, I can eventually bend straight leg and get a degree behind my mid-ankle, though not often.

Practice and practice Yet, clearly some people, usually men have limitations with this stance.

Thanks. The trainer, a great woman, actually taught me some degree of the relax/contract. I have yet to meet many men that can do a full pilates work-out, unless their dancers. Also, yoga has greatly assisted but, some asanas I don't do. I have a whacked L4/L5/S1.

I slipped 2 of my discs in my spine, and as a result my left leg:

a. locks up past a certain point bending down
b. has limited mobility and full on sciatica
c. is smaller and weaker than the right
