Actually the basic reach that goes into smartphones comes from government back scientists and engineers. The majority of patents used in the IPhone are government patents. Thats socialist innovation spurring capitalism. Same with the internet, the ARPANET is the precursor created by government and public universtieis, which has given rise to more innovation and trade.

To add on, the film is actually incredibly prescient if you think about it. They destroyed the banks at the end, their headquarters, to essentially free up the people.

Many years later you have the financial meltdown, and Occupy Wall Street and now people like Warren and Sanders who are actually willing to take them down.

If people are too consumed with self improvement, they won't see beyond the self and come to understand the system keeping them down. The financial industry is a massive machine that perpetuates inequality.

When he fights Tyler Durden, he's figting himself. He has to destroy his current and limited ego, to let go of the petty sit we currently stake our self worth on, before he can become a real person.

The destruction is both allegorical (don't actually hurt yourself) and real (destroy that which oppresses you). Of course as most revolutions or serious social changes go, the effects are spritual rebirth or darkness, but also a danger of losing things like our present condition, for better or worse.

So here's the thing about Tyler: Tyler is everything the protagonist wishes he was. "All the ways you wish you could be, that's me. I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not." But the protagonist never became that way himself, just his split personality. Which is bizarre when you think about it. It kind of hints at the fact that Tyler's mentality is, in fact, totally unhinged. Tyler is also a giant, nihilistic, self-destructive, self-deceiving lie. Both he and the protagonist realize that if they do what Tyler wants to do they'll be shot to death sooner or later, and well before the 'revolution' would have any chance at success.Tyler has the surface appearance of a Great Person, but he will get himself killed before he can accomplish much.

And all those government research dollars are still competed for by universities, not dissimilarly to a free market system. A lot of private universities also churn out quite a bit of technology as well(MIT, despite having Massachusetts in it's name, is private). Socialism may provide an economic boost, and perhaps we would be worse off without some of it, but capitalism doesn't survive because of it. Don't believe me, ask the ghosts of dozens of former socialist countries.
