Also, it's not that I don't want to improve in cardio, but my running time means nothing to me. I do it because it helps me get through more volume when lifting.

I run on my off days of lifting. I usually just do 3 miles each time of running/walking and typically at least try to push myself to run more than I walk. Couch to 5k seems kind of cool for complete beginners but I started by just going outside and running.

You can probably get cheap running shoes at Ross or on clearance at a sneaker store. If you aren't serious about it, don't worry about spending a bajillion dollars on top tier equipment right off the bat. I still run in my nike free runs and get by just fine.

/fit/ is very lifting centric, so let us know how serious you are about running. I run as conditioning for lifting and boxing. I don't run just to run, so my advice would be different than an actual runner's.
