I was talking to someone in the gym who observed some youths, maybe 12-14, doing bench with <1pl8 and mentioned that they wouldn't let their children work out like that while the children were still growing.

This is an old wives tale, right? Weights won't actually make you shorter if you lift during puberty?

In addition to those two questions; is weight training even the best way to get ripped as a teen? I personally only did cardio and swimming until 18 and was never ripped or built to any real degree.
>>
>>36441956
you can't use google, nigga?
>>
>This is an old wives tale, right?
Right
>Weights won't actually make you shorter if you lift during puberty?
Yeah, it's an insane idea. If anything, the boosted hormones would increase height.

>is weight training even the best way to get ripped as a teen?
Genetics is the best, drugs are the second best. Lifting's the third best.
>>
>>36441979
Basically this. The reason people think lifting can stunt growth is because people don't eat enough.

I started working out when I was 15, everyone told me I was going to end up stunted but I ended up 190cm, so did another guy I worked out with.
Dont let fucking gains goblins steal your kids gains and rob them of good mental and physical development.
>>
Anecdotally, I suspect there might be some stunting going on, but I don't know how and this is just a suspicion.

There is no good scientific study to show it happens at all, but likewise there is no good study that proves it doesn't stunt growth.

That said, the reason some (educated) people advise against childhood weightlifting is because it's said it can injure the growth plate (basically where long bones grow from). This has been weakly shown to not happen. Injuring the growth plate is possible and would probably be a concern for young lifters, but growth plate injury won't cause stunted growth in a general sense, it will cause stunted growth in that specific bone.

So the kid won't be little, he'll just have one leg shorter than the other.

So rationally, I don't think it's true.
>>
>>36441956
as long as kids get their full calorie intake everyday, they'll reach their full health potential
>>
The reason some kids stop growing after they started lifting is because they started pinning test as well. People only need to see 1 case of a dude like that and they'll think it's a fact that lifting stunts growth.
>>

>be 16
>hit the gym regularly
>puberty hits
>body overlooks it's natural development, decides to use food for dem der gains
>ff 5 years

/end
>>
>>36442653
HAHA

why did i lol so hard at this
>>
>>36441956
Yes, it's a myth. The only way it's related is that overtraining can lead to a nutritional/hormonal situation that isn't conducive to growth. But I vividly remember visiting the personal trainer my parents signed me up with to teach me the proper basics some years later, and wondering who the jacked 6'3", dreadlocked dude standing near him was, and realizing it was his son, who I'd last seen when he was 5'3". Sure didn't stunt his growth.
>>
The only thing that stunts growth is not eating when young. I have a twin brother, we both look the same, i started lifting weights with my hockey team at 13 and i grew to be 6'0. My brother on the other hand didn't lift and had an eating disorder (anorexic) from 12-15. He came out at 5'6.
And since we're twins we should be the same height +/- 1 inch max. I still kinda poke fun at him and he's still so regretful for being retarded as a teenager.
>>
>>36441956
It's just horseshit. Kids that have an active, healthy, and strong lifestyle during their teens have the luxury of carrying that healthy body into old age.

>tfw 5'7
>Justin Bieber is literally taller than me
>>
I didn't eat properly whatsoever during puberty and I was always shorter than the girls before, yet I still went above 6ft. Idk I think it's all about genetics. My older brother ate plenty and he's an inch shorter than me....
>>
>>36441956
If done with proper form it's likely to induce growth rather than stunt it. If they're deadliftin on the express train to snap city then it will probably stunt them, or if they're not adjusting the calories to take into account the extra needed
>>
>>36441956
I think it could stunt growth a little, but not sure how much.

Lifting thickens and tightens muscle fibers, which actually do exert a lot of force on the bones. Growing pains are the result of growing bones pulling on muscles that haven't stretched out enough to go for the ride, so it stands to reason that making those muscles tighter and thicker would make that worse.
>>
>>36442712
If puberty hit you at 16 you were always destined to be a manlet, homie.
>>
>>36443310
Jbiebs is like 5'6", don't let the media sensationalism fool you, they'll try to convince people that he's taller than he actually is.
>>
>>36441956
No, it's real. It's because loading your spine with heavy loads compresses your disks.
>>
>>36441979
>If anything, the boosted hormones would increase height.
lol /fat/...
>>
i don't know about this. i've witnessed someone completely stop growing in height after they started lifting.

manlet got stuck at 5'5" likely because his body could not handle growing lots of new muscle and gaining height simultaneously

yeah, but then you regain that half of an inch when you sleep.
>>
heavy exercise causes boobs to underdevelop. This is why gymnasts are all flat.
>>
>>36445419
thats probably just diet related.

Anecdotally I've noticed that fat kids are usually taller than their classmates.

Maybe if you bulk while lifting you can muscle and height at once.

i dont know why ive never noticed this, but this is so fucking true

If this was true then college athletics would fucking suck. Manlets like to muke up stories to stoke the flames of hope
>>
>>36445682

Mong. They are top gymnasts because they have smaller tits not the other way around.
>>
When the height war gets underway will all the manlets pair up and have the shorter one ride on the other one's shoulders? Or will they develop biological super suits like the little aliens in Independence Day?

so you're saying the biggest factor that separates top tier female gymnasts and the ones trailing them are the size of their tits?
>>
I started lifting with 16, didn't do much but still with some quiet heavy weight for my height/weight.
i stopped growing at 17 for some reason, i don't smoke or anything so i shouldn't have stopped.. ;/ 5'8'' manlet for life
>>
>>36446135
1. No, he is not saying that is the "biggest factor". You completely pulled this part of the argument out of your ass. He is saying it is A factor.
2. Yes it is a factor. Simona Halep, a tennis player, went up 450 places in the world rankings in a year by having a breast reduction from a DD to a C. And that is in tennis. In gymnastics the influence of breasts would be way way greater due to the movements you're doing
