Swimming is the best
>>
Only real problem in my opinion is that it fucks up my hair and make it really dry, also if gets kinds boring on endurance days
>>
it's pretty great, fuck public swimming pools though.
>>
>>35610191

Especially if you want wide shoulders, no hips.....looking at you, ladies.
>>
>>35610199
if you can afford a salt water pool, or have a salt water pool in your area then it will do the opposite, it makes your hair feel great and your skin look really good.
>>
>>35610199
fucking this, the day after my hair feels like complete shit from the chlorine and takes ages to wash out.
>>
>>35610402
>salt water pool
why would such a thing exist? Hotels build pools right next to the beach so the people dont have to swim in the disgusting salt water
>>
>>35610421
The salt water is like 1/8th of seawater. You can barely taste the salt
>>
>>35610421
you are a fucking retard, a salt water pool has a tiny amount of salt used for filtration, if you can smell or taste salt at all that means your filter is broken and you should get out of the pool ASAP.

PROTIP: IF YOU ARE IN A CHLORINE POOL AND IT TASTES LIKE SALT THIS MEANS THEY DO NOT CLEAN THE POOL REGULARLY ENOUGH, THAT IS THE TASTE OF SWEAT

SOURCE: 4+ YEARS OF LIFEGUARDING VARIOUS GREATER LOS ANGELES AREA POOLS
>>
>>35610456
ALSO TO BE CLEAR, BY CLEAN THE POOL I MEAN DRAINING IT, CHLORINE FILTERS WILL ADD SMALL AMOUNTS OF SALT TO A POOL AND AFTER ABOUT 6-10+ YEARS WITHOUT DRAINING, THE POOL WILL START TO NOTICEABLY TASTE SALTY, THE THING ABOUT SWEAT WAS A JOKE SORRY

Practice holding breath until you can hold it a long time.

Practice not freaking out about how deep you're going to go underwater.

Congratulations, you're a free diver.

THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT I can believe it

The only local pool we have in my area is part of an overpriced members-only gym. Whenever I'm unfortunate enough to accidentally ingest the water it tastes noticeably salty. Also when you look underwater it's basically filled with little bits of hair and toilet paper and god knows what. They probably haven't properly cleaned it in my lifetime, and I am an old fuck (relative to the average /fit/ user)

No more or less boring than running or cycling, just less stressful on your joints
>>Makes hair and skin dry
Lotion and good shampoo solves that.
>>Swimmer girls have broad back, no hips
Booty and legs tho.
>>Does not make you strong, fast, agile etc
Gives you a strong back, core and shoulders.
>>Is just not fun at all
Cardio is never fun, m8.
Swimming burns more calories per mile than any other form of cardio, while being way less stressful on your joints (unless you're training like Michael Phelps)
Swimming is literally God tier and you're too stupid/poor to realize it.
>>
>>35610402
yes, but a beach is not a good place to learn proper form. I used to swim for 2 hours a day competitively every day for 2 years, improper form over a long period of time opens you up to a lot of repetitive stress injuries, and it's hard to improve form when you are doing a very high resistance swim (beach swim) but otherwise go for it, swim and get that pusy

Literally builds god tier endurance. I started swimming when i was 6 or younger, can;t remember, and after years of training, my liver just stopped hurting when i got tired, like it would've taken an impossible effort to get me tired. Also the harder you train for it the better endurance results you get. While i was growing up my mother always had problems finding me clothes that fit my shoulders, I also have huge legs. When i'll have a kid, first i'll have him swim as soon as he is able to, it's just the perfect sport for development. You also build muscle mass, but i suppose it's more effective on people that are still growing. You also get taller from it. Oh and i don;t know about others but i literally can not drown. I can make my body float on the surface of water without any effort.

Floating has nothing to do with anything but density. I was a nation fly sprinter and my legs sink like I've wronged the mob if I'm not kicking. Then and now.
>>
>>35625319
>what is buoyancy
Amount of salt in water and in your body will affect this.
>>
I always get cramps while swimming. Fucking Kompartmentsyndrom :(
>>
Do good swimmers have broad back/shoulders because of swimming, or are they good swimmers because they already had broad back/shoulders?
>>
>>35625332
that's because salt affects the density of the water...
>>
>>35625319
It's about dispersing your weight across the wate surface so that there is little water tension. Density isn't that much of a problem unless you're an inanimate object.
>>
>>35625393
I don't know, but there's not one kid that i grew up with swimming that has shit shoulder width.
>>
>>35625393
Begs the question, what do you define as broad? I think most guys who swim (but not like the top tier competitive swimmers) just have well developped shoulders (the type of shoulders that don't make your head look gigantic), but I wouldn't say the majority of them have really broad shoulders- I think that's genetics.
>>

This, and especially with the backstroke. I either slam my head or my hand against the wall or I'm not even close to it and have to float there for a few seconds.

The pool I swim at is also catered toward people who dont actually swim. The middle three lanes are for slow breaststroke, the two lanes on the right are for the even slower breaststrokers and the one lane on the left is the normal lane. And I fucking hate swimming with more than 3 people in one lane.

With backstroke try this. When you reach the flags count how many strokes it take you to reach the wall.. and thats it, practice how many strokes it takes you when you're going slow, how many strokes it takes you when you're going fast and get used to it.

It's not as extreme as that pic, but pier diving on a windy day is hands-down the most fun I've had in a while. Did that for a couple hours on vacation this summer and that was the highlight. The only danger I see is tiring out and not knowing when to stop because it's so fucking fun.

maybe it was too much for you to handle or you went to explosive from the start and rekt yourself without thinking. Going from a 25m semi olympic pool to a 50m olympic pool feels like a huge change if you've never used one.

I would start by during at least a 50m underwater in a pool without breathing and then go to clear water. As a competitive swimmer throughout my childhood i can dive to about 15m-20m down~
>>
>>35634543
do you mean swimming 50m without breathing or looking for a 50m deep pool and dive practice there?

>>35634790
He probably means the former. It's not terribly hard but definitely not something you can do as a beginner.

>>
>>35633128
Yeah there's a big difference between swimming in a 25m pool and swimming in a 50m pool. It's twice the distance but more than twice as hard, since you lose the comfortable cushion of being able to turn every 25meters. I play water polo so I'm used to swimming short bursts, and while I train 3 times a week, going to a 50m pool gets me every time. It's like a whole new level of cardio
>>
>>35634287
>>35636873
I have always trained in a 50m pool and it was the opposite for me. Going to a 25m pool would feel so tedious when doing 4km+ training, all those turns, all the time...

>>35632361
There are no flags. The only thing I can use is the roof, but its not as accurate

I just started swimming again after doing it in middle school. Right now I'm doing 400 meters Freestyle without stopping (sprinting the last 50m) and repeating this until I do on average 2km a day, 3 days a week.

Should I keep doing this and keep increasing the distance? Or should I also incorporate another set for variety?
>>
>>35637595
Depends, what is your goal? If you want a good aesthetic look, focus on short sprints and high intensity interval training (like for example, do 20 x 50 meters, leave at every 60 seconds and go full pace).

I'm getting back into swimming at 26 but I'm having issues with an inflamed shoulder. I swam competitively for 11 years and so I swim at a pretty good pace which may be causing the issue. Anyone have experience swimming at a fast pace at an older age? Should I just give up trying to practice at high intensity and just start swimming slow pace, continuous laps like all the other old people?

>>
>>35643412
are you out of shape or something related? I had problems with my shoulder when swimming fast and it turned out that my muscles where growing very fast and one of the bones in the shoulder was getting pushed over by it. Went to the therapist and she put me to do some stretches and to stretch before and after swimming at least 15minutes and I've had no problem since then.

Maybe you're pushing yourself too fast thinking you got the same godtier physical condition from 11 years before..
>>
>>35643412
also let it rest for at least a week, inflamed shoulder its very common in swimmers but if you dont let it heal it can turn to be a nasty injury. Try using on a bag of ice on it when you're at your place..

Swam for years as a youth, mainly backstroke. Was on a small club team. Left it for over 15 years, now back. I'm a senior and been asked to swim in two masters programs, not ready. Always been into physical culture, et cet. Take a break, however, if the shoulder is near constantly sore, absolutely see someone - could be several matters.
Have whacked-out energy level; last year jumped into a local lake for open swim and just went 3/4 of a mile non-stop backstroke.
Peace and breathe

I used to be in a good club (several national medalists, I probably still have an Olympic medalist autograph somewhere). I did a few competitions for the lulz and because it was expected of everyone to attempt to compete at least at regional level, got a few medals, but I really wasn't serious into it at all. Then I stopped swimming after high school because I'm a lazy fuck, lost my muscle mass, took on a few pounds for good measure to kill my abs definition.

Recently realized how retarded I was, and after 5y, back in my home town for a year, decided to swim at club again. Was pleasantly surprised to see that even though I've lost all of my stamina (wtf why am I tired after 100m), I've kept most of my form muscle memory and I'm usually the fastest in the pool on weekends when there's only casuals. I'll probably force myself to go back on week nights 3 times a week to get yelled at by trainer again.
>>
Im going to compete for the first time in my life in about three months. I've been swiming for a year and a half, what could be some good general recomendations for a "newbie"? I know I will probably get rekt'd by everybody else in my categorie but i dont give a fuck. Im planing on going in a 50m or 100m event, what style do you guys recommend for a first timer?
>>
>>35645741
>what style do you guys recommend for a first timer?
Freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke are all pretty good for newbies

Anyway, remember to completely shave your body (except head) so that you can get an advantage.
>>
>>35645741
If you've been swimming for a year and a half regularly, free style is probably where you'll be most confident, this should be your bread and butter. 50 or 100m are good starter lengths, it'll be over before you can think about getting tired so you can just focus on sanic. At any rate ask your trainer, he won't register you for something if he doesn't think you can make it.

It doesn't really matter if you get rekt (you probably won't, most local competitions are really casual and unless you literally sink in the pool you'll do ok). What's actually interesting is you'll get a comp time that will be a good baseline to put you in future comps against people roughly your level.

It's ok if the day of the event your heart is racing and you have butterfly in your stomach just from getting ready with all these people looking at you (protip: most of them are here for relatives and unless you drown or dive before the signal no one will even look at you); it'll go away after 15m because swimming hard should clear your mind.
When you swim don't look at the other swimmers, focus on going sanic and do not fuck your form (sucks when you get disqualified for bad form).
At the finish, you need to hit the plate hard enough for it to register and stop the watch. Don't be that faggot who only brushes it with the tip of his fingers, give a good full palm thump.
You might want to practice diving on your own time to make sure you have the form down if your trainer hasn't made you practice it specifically recently.

>Anyway, remember to completely shave your body (except head) so that you can get an advantage.
And don't do this, you're not at a level where suits and shaving are even remotely relevant.
>>
Swam in my first meet today after quitting for a year. I actually did decent, 27.37 for 50 fly and 25.99 for 50 free with only a couple weeks of training.

ITT; No one knows how pool maintenance actually works.

Where do I start. Pools don't get "drained" unless there is a serious chemical problem or it needs acid washed. A typical pool will have one of three types of filters, cartridge, de, or sand. The most common being sand as its cheap and quite effective. You backwash that filter with pool water. It cleans the sand out while disposing of pool water. This is done twice or three times a week on a typical public pool. Allowing water turn over. The other two filters act similar except you just spray off cartridge filters and backwash and replace the de in the filter for the other.

Now on to salt pools. First off, there is chlorine in a salt pool. You typically keep the salt level around 2500-4000ppm. The salt water is run through an electrified cell that converts the salt to chlorine. You adjust output to use and keep the chlorine around 3-5ppm.
That chlorine smell you get with a high use pool isn't chlorine, its chloramine, or used up chlorine. It smells like that from the body sweat and piss in the water. The chlorine is eating that and being turned into chloramine. Which the only way to get rid of is from a backwash or regular partial water changes.

And now you know.
>>
>>35646647
so you're telling me that the chlorine/chloramine smell is the smell from the filth in the pool being killed?
>>
>>35647332
To a degree. To add to what >>35646647
said, the other major component with Chlorine is that it can form HOCL, hypochlorous acid, which when it ionises to (OCL-) is highly antibacterial. HOCL is also antibacterial but not to the same extent. It slips into bacteria and basically kills them from the inside out by destroying the internal structures of the bacteria.

So whilst it does get rid of sweat and other fluids, it's also killing bacteria and that sort of thing too. The smell of chlorine is always going to hang around because of exchange surfaces: if atoms of chlorine get in your nose you'll smell it: as there is chlorine in the water and trace quantities in the air, you smell it.

It's great. My overweight mother felt she was qualified to give non-solicited swimming advice because my brother and I had been swimming for years. Made her actually try swimming, she couldn't complete 25m butterfly without drowning half way through, and she felt like throwing up from all the pool water she ate trying to breathe in freestyle. She lasted a month and I haven't heard her bitch about anyone's form since then.

Guy who works maintaining wastewater treatment plants here: there is a certain amount of bacteria/filth in the water that can't get kill using standard methods. Although using chlorine will destroy the outward structures of most bacteria and break down piss and sweat, there is a certain amount that they can't get rid off unless they use a more powerful method, like UV/ozone/more sophisticated filters.

tl;dr: yes, you still drink piss and a small amount of virus.

Bonus points: there is always microbes and shit in tap water and your clean glassware. You don't get sick because it has so few of them. I don't really mind about it anymore.

Yeah, some of them just won't go down: same as with all your hand-washes and gels and that sort of stuff you get these days. It's just one of the things you accept by using a public pool: and to be fair, the amount of bacteria and stuff on the surfaces of gym equipment probably rivals or exceeds the levels in poolwater anyway.

>>35649391
Pick a fast lane. It's douchebaggy if you're much faster than everyone else in the lane and have to keep overtaking everyone. It is equally douchy btw if you're much slower than everyone else. However, if even the fastest lane is too slow (a familiar feeling for any ex-swimmer going to a public pool) I guess you have no choice.
