I'm going to school for physical therapy assistant. Missed PT gpa requirement by .04, damn German classes. But my job right now is gym desk/helper, therapy clinic aide, and I am picking up trainer here soon. Make $10/hr as a gym worker/aide. I will be making $20/hr once I pass my trainer test. Not bad when you are in school.

its actually pretty comfortable. Rent is stupid high around here for a one bed room (with a dog) but I split it with my gf so rent alone is ~1 - 1.2 k a month. Still kinda sucks but its workable since you get ~2k biweekly after taxes.

Work as a sushi chef and trainer at a local restaurant really close to UCF. $6.53 an hour plus tip and $9.00 plus tip while training. I recently got in to graduate school for video games so I'll probably end up being a programmer or producer. Not to mention this place is exquisite for bulking.

I work on the software used by fighter jets. Probably sounds cooler than it is - software dev is software dev really. Its a good place to work because there's rarely urgent deadlines and its fairly specialist so the moneys good.

When you start you fill out a w-4. On it you luck the number of allowances you want. The easy way is picking zero. This means the feds take the maximum tax rate from your check then when you get your w-2 at the end of the year and file taxes, you'll get whatever extra back. I'm assuming you're not married and have no children so a single allowance is probably your best bet. You'll get about an extra 2-4 hundred back on your check and still end up with a few grand in a tax return.

Depending on how responsible you are with money you can actually take more allowances than recommended. It just means you will get more of your gross salary up front but come tax time you'll have to pay up what is owed. If you think you're good with money, go this route and just have your expected tax debt saved in an account somewhere.

I don't know about the actuarial field but if you are serious about quant work, a finance degree is not going to cut it. In fact, it could be a hindrance.

I worked at an HFT/quant shop before coming back to aerospace and seeing any finance or business related majors on a resume would have put your application directly in the trash. I know this was the case at many other reputable shops as well.

The quant world is populated by math/physics/cs/engineering guys and can be very hostile to traditional finance types. As a general rule, in my experience the better the shop the less likely they are to hire those with more traditional finance/banking backgrounds, especially for any PM/trading roles.

The burn out rate is definitely higher than the industry standard. SpaceX tends to really work the young engineers into the ground and we lose a lot of people after the first 1-2 years. The benefit of this is that for those of us who stick around we have a pretty fast promotion track compared to most aero/defense corps with lower turnover.

Also, as you move up and maintain a good reputation you get much more leeway in your workload/schedule. You can still put in 70 hour weeks if you want but there are plenty of people doing 50 hour weeks, although 50 hours is less than typical in your first 1-2 years here.

Overall, I really like the environment though. I think we probably have quite a few employees leaving here pissed off and they are generally pretty vocal about their dislike of their time here and this tends to influence our rep in the industry.

In general, I find most engineers fairly spoiled and entitled so I don't have a ton of sympathy for those who come to work here and then constantly bitch about the tempo.

I did a ton of collaborate research at JPL when I attended/worked at Caltech. I really enjoyed my time there. There are some very smart people around, the work environment and work/life balance are great and the JPL campus is beautiful. Having Caltech close by and running things at JPL is nice as well since you can collaborate on research, attend lectures and events.

Plus, I really miss the Pasadena/Altadena area.

I know someone who worked at MDA and enjoyed it, sorry to hear that SSL sucks.

I did a summer research fellowship at LANL. The national labs can be really great places to work. One of the cluster architects I worked with when I was in finance worked at Sandia for 8-9 years and loved it.

That looks like a very solid program and I'm sure it would be beneficial. You need to really think about what role you want to be in (PM, strategy, trading, pure execution, back-testing, risk) and what caliber shop you are aiming for.

Take my experience with a grain of salt since I was only in the HFT world for 3-4 years and I ended up at one of the top firms through an acquisition rather being hired directly by them. Even coming from Caltech undergrad with a fairly good research track record I would never have made it into that shop if my firm wasn't acquired.

Almost everyone I worked with who was actually responsible for trading and strategy came from top 5-10 PhD programs in pure/applied math and physics. And one characteristic they almost all shared was none of them were looking to get into finance as a career. They came from extremely strong academic research backgrounds and went the finance route later on for one reason or another.

I don't want to discourage you but I want to point out the kind of competition you'll face for the most lucrative positions. You'll be going up against candidates who could have tenure track positions available to them but are choosing finance instead.

Well I'm originally from Inglewood and the only reason I came back here instead of staying over in pittsburgh was because family, however it all got resolved pretty fast so I'm at best looking to get there in 2017.

I live in California so it's fucking insanely hard to get a job for it here. Doctors have a God complex, nurses think they're doctors, everything we deal with is airborne diseases so it's super easy to get sick, and pay is starting to decrease so it's so inflated. The lowest I've heard them start at here in California is $17. Also, there is no moving up after Lead RT, unless you want to teach which pays baller amounts of money from what I've heard.
