I work in advertising. Sometimes I think about becoming a personal trainer and lifting all day, but I'm not sure I want to turn a hobby into work. Also, I don't think personal trainers make much unless they're 'a trainer to the stars'.
>>
>>35579905
its good that youre thinking about your decisions. just know that you dont know what its like until youre knee-deep in the shit. i thought i would like med school. turns out the reality of studying hours and hours every day, 6 days a week made me more miserable than i thought it would. the thought of doing that and working 80 hours a week for the duration of a 3+ year long residency made me want to kill myself.
>>
I do media and social media analysis for a firm in arms industry.

Become a physical therapist bro. I the guy I was going to has a audi r8 so im assuming he's making a lot, and he's basically just helping injured people get better all day. Gives you a shitload of pussy exercises though, once he found out I lifted he changed the shit he was having me doing a lot, so I guess it's for safety bs lmao
>>
>>35579922
check'd
also heard the same thing was just wondering. I know some good looking dudes who work as PTs for suburban milfs make pretty good money but the guys working in corporate gyms have to deal with a lot of shit and don't get paid well. plus the whole commission based salary thing doesn't sound appealing desu
>>
I'm going to school for physical therapy assistant. Missed PT gpa requirement by .04, damn German classes. But my job right now is gym desk/helper, therapy clinic aide, and I am picking up trainer here soon. Make $10/hr as a gym worker/aide. I will be making $20/hr once I pass my trainer test. Not bad when you are in school.
>>
>>35579955
PTs don't make that much unless you own your own clinic senpai. Median is around 70k after a year or two out of school so it's not bad, but it's also a lot of paperwork and bringing home work with all the ACA stuff that's getting put into place
>>
>>35580012
it's all good senpai, i've heard PTA is actually pretty awesome because decent salary but not as much responsibility + more flexibility and less paperwork. That sounds pretty nice though, already doing better than most people your age keep it up familia

>>
I optimise web content for search engines, otherwise known as SEO. It's all above board at an agency.
>>
>>35580126
its actually pretty comfortable. Rent is stupid high around here for a one bed room (with a dog) but I split it with my gf so rent alone is ~1 - 1.2 k a month. Still kinda sucks but its workable since you get ~2k biweekly after taxes.

It is fun as fuck and pays pretty well for not having to do a whole lot but the area is BORING (the area around stanford is either stupidly poor or gentrified as fuck), and full of white / asian peple so I usually end up driving to berkeley / oakland when I want to turn up.

12K. My first deployment paid off all my student loans. Second deployment paid off my suv and a nice down payment on my 2015 ram1500. But most people don't save. They usually join at 18 with no prior income and no idea how to use their money.

No fuck you. That place is a hell hole; and horrible for starting families/serious relationships. Not to mention it's a fucking sausage fest.

I had 95K there and lived as minimum as I can; boy it was shit. Worse than NY.

Great for Neets and homos. Horrible for finding cuties since all of them are in the opposite side of Cali. And terrible for serious relationships.

Get out while you still can m8. Overpopulated field, too few jobs way tooo many psych majors. It's hard as fuck to have your own independent practice and you won't make much money unless you have a really good rep. Only way to advance in that career is to be fucking ruthless from what I've seen.

where do you live? Read a bunch of prognosis saying that it won't be overpopulated at all in Sweden, and a degree in psychology seems to be a great merit if you wanted to get into organizational consulting.

you know, sometimes people get in a bad situation that they can't get out of, no matter how optimistic they are or how much they want things to change. poor people know this well.

good feelings and optimism arent always enough. and even the drive to succeed isnt necessarily enough, some people will send out 200 resumes without a single response.

after a while, a life of struggle gets difficult. it's harder and harder to get up in the morning, and get out of bed. eventually, you just want it to stop. a release from that crappy existence.

I actually understand now why people end their lives. at first I thought it was selfish or irrational. but it makes a lot of sense now.

I cant die yet though, I want to reach my fitness goals. I doubt it will change anything, but I want to do that for myself.

I spent a year unemployed, working shitty part time retail when I could get it and wanting to kill myself after I graduated uni. A year after that, my financial situation is basically unchanged, but lifting and meditation have changed my attitude completely.

I'm not saying that changing your attitude will get you a job, etc. Realistically, the economy is only going to become even less job friendly in the future. But if you can find joy in living, then you can be happy even with the shitty hand our generation has been dealt.

LPN's only a two year degree and at the place I work at they make $23.50 and all they have to do is med pass, which is easy, I used to do it at an assisted living.
I guess I just felt like I'd be giving up on ju previous dream of being s Doctor if I did that, but whatever.
The only thing is I just got a DUI they don't know about and I don't know if I can get hired anywhere else now.

Good feelings and optimism are not enough because it is just half the picture. Nobody is happy all the time.

Find some job to make you happier. If you've got no one to take care of right now, youve got nothing to lose.

I'm a family resource specialist at a non profit agency.

Pros
>I work 10-4 including an hour and a half lunch
>Probably work a max of 1-2 hours each day, rest of my time is spend fucking around on 4chan and Youtube
>As many vacation days as I want as long as I don't get too greedy about it

>I ended up having 2 supervisors for some reason. 1st supervisor is maximum chill. Second supervisor was a dick at first, but getting cooler
>Full benefits, 401k, all that good stuff

Cons

>Sometimes (every other month maybe) I have to work weekends
>Second supervisor, while not a dick anymore, isn't as cool as my first supervisor
>No room to grow or get promoted

All in all, it's a decent enough job. I used to be a teacher and make 50k a year. I took a pay cut because that shit was stressful as hell and teachers work CONSTANTLY. Maybe try to find a job outside your comfort zone?

Like I said, I was a teacher and getting into an office job was a huge "culture shock" for me, I guess you could say. It ended up working out, though.

There have literally been days like this at my job:
>Arrive at job at 10:30am
>No one's here, play 3DS until 12pm
>Go home for lunch, take a nap, get back at 1:30pm
>Supervisor has finally made it back, but she's on the phone laughing it up with her friends or something
>Get on 4chan and shit post until 3:30pm
>Duck off to the bathroom, take a shit and play Tetris until 4pm
>Go home

This is not a rare occurrence either. Happens at least once a week.

Wtf? Are you Greek? Do you're god damn job. You're killing the economy.
>>
>>35588805
When you start you fill out a w-4. On it you luck the number of allowances you want. The easy way is picking zero. This means the feds take the maximum tax rate from your check then when you get your w-2 at the end of the year and file taxes, you'll get whatever extra back. I'm assuming you're not married and have no children so a single allowance is probably your best bet. You'll get about an extra 2-4 hundred back on your check and still end up with a few grand in a tax return.

Depending on how responsible you are with money you can actually take more allowances than recommended. It just means you will get more of your gross salary up front but come tax time you'll have to pay up what is owed. If you think you're good with money, go this route and just have your expected tax debt saved in an account somewhere.

That's not how things work. He's saying because his boss isn't there he doesn't work. You should have initiative and do something regardless. That's what you're paid for. The idea that "I do t have to, so I won't" is crippling to humanity. Strive to do your best at all times.
>>
>>35589072
That's what leads to crippling unpaid extra hours on the job because if you don't do those 70hour weeks just to be a productive employee, someone else will.

Most business owners would use what you just said to force their employees to work more and more if given the opportunity.
Obviously you can say its not forced since in the end you have a choice between working to the bone and getting laid off
>>
>>35589168
Watch out, your millennial is showing. Those "extra unpaid hours" is called your job. I'm sorry if I wouldn't want my employees fucking off for one fifth of the time I'm paying them to work. Besides a ds belongs at home, not at work.

Besides if you'd ever worked you would know that those lazy fucks leave work to be done. And that's not sticking it to the man, it's sticking it to your fellow employees who have to pick up the slack and resent you.
>>
>>35589386
Nah, I did a desk job for 2 years and I realized what sort of a cesspool of shit it is. Dealing with bosses who don't give a shit if you pass out from overworking as long as the bottom lines are met. Brown nosing colleagues who pretend that working 24/7 is their calling and that others should follow in their footsteps (thus making them seem like the dependable type to the boss)

Fuck all of that. It aint worth sacrificing so much of your life and sanity to office madness. I have no idea how people can tolerate that for more than a couple of years.

Moved on to real estate, became my own boss and never looked back.
>>
>>35589386
Not to disturb you two and your ranting but I'm >>35589008
and my point was that
>It's not his problem that his business have to many people on payroll or not enough to do.
My last boss hired 8 people to do a job that required 3 people. The result was people didn't have enough to do and procrastinated, even after doing a lot of stuff not designated for their position. The boss also lost a lot of money through doing stuff this way and ended up going bankrupt.

That's how life works sometimes, and you would know this if you 'ever worked' yourself.

Just curious. A friend of mine is in school to be a male nurse and he was telling me about how shitty it was for him in L&D, and how it was damn near impossible for him to get any experience in that area because so many of the patients (and their husbands especially) refuse to let another guy come in the room to check their wive's genitals. I was just going to ask if you had ever experienced anything like that and what your thoughts were about it. He and I got into a big argument because I also wouldn't let another guy (nurse or doctor) examine my wife/girlfriend while she was naked.

I don't know about the actuarial field but if you are serious about quant work, a finance degree is not going to cut it. In fact, it could be a hindrance.

I worked at an HFT/quant shop before coming back to aerospace and seeing any finance or business related majors on a resume would have put your application directly in the trash. I know this was the case at many other reputable shops as well.

The quant world is populated by math/physics/cs/engineering guys and can be very hostile to traditional finance types. As a general rule, in my experience the better the shop the less likely they are to hire those with more traditional finance/banking backgrounds, especially for any PM/trading roles.

>>35589749
I'm 31, not sure if that counts as a young dude but I sure don't feel young anymore.

The burn out rate is definitely higher than the industry standard. SpaceX tends to really work the young engineers into the ground and we lose a lot of people after the first 1-2 years. The benefit of this is that for those of us who stick around we have a pretty fast promotion track compared to most aero/defense corps with lower turnover.

Also, as you move up and maintain a good reputation you get much more leeway in your workload/schedule. You can still put in 70 hour weeks if you want but there are plenty of people doing 50 hour weeks, although 50 hours is less than typical in your first 1-2 years here.

Overall, I really like the environment though. I think we probably have quite a few employees leaving here pissed off and they are generally pretty vocal about their dislike of their time here and this tends to influence our rep in the industry.

In general, I find most engineers fairly spoiled and entitled so I don't have a ton of sympathy for those who come to work here and then constantly bitch about the tempo.
>>
>>35591175
>>35589749

I know everyone's experience will vary but the one thing that SpaceX does extremely well is letting prospective employees know what the work/life balance is like and what is expected of them. Again, I don't have much sympathy for people who are told this time and again during the interview process and then still find reasons to complain once they've been here a couple of months.

Are you at Boeing in El Segundo? How is life there? I had a good friend at Boeing in Seal Beach who really enjoyed working there.

>work as a personal trainer
Yes, I worked freelance, got very little exposure so I did the ol' trojan horse at a 24 hour fitness.

>work at 24hr
>give pdf of Starting Strength to people for free
>teach OHP, SQ, BN, DL for the free sessions to people
>get noobs on SS with arm accessories
>branch them into TM or PPL
>follow with 5/3/1 (my alternative version) or modified sheiko (so that normies can handle it)
>design my own routines that change to the person

>hire at 24 hour
>find private gym to train at near by
>get clients at 24
>tell them you will charge them cheaper somewhere else, this is after they already buy training from jewty four hour
>or, if theyre poor, ask them to purchase 80/mo for 1 session and routine planning + diet planning for each month
>slowly keep funneling clients, DONT GET CAUGHT
>leave 24 when stable enough

I also started marketing myself as able to teach group classes for corporations and apartment complexes, which pays 50$/hr and 10 people show up at the apartments on average.

I make like 2k/mo, but for the first year in which I was getting jewed at 24 hour, and building my own business (which requires a business license, insurance, private gym rent...) I was living on the literal edge. Sometimes no food to maintain strength in, gains took a beating for it, but now Im completely independent and make a comfortable living doing what I love

I did a ton of collaborate research at JPL when I attended/worked at Caltech. I really enjoyed my time there. There are some very smart people around, the work environment and work/life balance are great and the JPL campus is beautiful. Having Caltech close by and running things at JPL is nice as well since you can collaborate on research, attend lectures and events.

Plus, I really miss the Pasadena/Altadena area.

That looks like a very solid program and I'm sure it would be beneficial. You need to really think about what role you want to be in (PM, strategy, trading, pure execution, back-testing, risk) and what caliber shop you are aiming for.

Take my experience with a grain of salt since I was only in the HFT world for 3-4 years and I ended up at one of the top firms through an acquisition rather being hired directly by them. Even coming from Caltech undergrad with a fairly good research track record I would never have made it into that shop if my firm wasn't acquired.

Almost everyone I worked with who was actually responsible for trading and strategy came from top 5-10 PhD programs in pure/applied math and physics. And one characteristic they almost all shared was none of them were looking to get into finance as a career. They came from extremely strong academic research backgrounds and went the finance route later on for one reason or another.

I don't want to discourage you but I want to point out the kind of competition you'll face for the most lucrative positions. You'll be going up against candidates who could have tenure track positions available to them but are choosing finance instead.
