Can someone redpill me on punching bag workouts?

Good high intensity interval training method.
But don't just go smacking it, learn the proper form first or you'll look retarded and hurt your wrist and hands.
If you punch a bag long enough you get good at punching stuff
I think its more about learning proper technique.
All commercial bags are filled with somebody's old clothes.

I'm a fitness noob, but it seems like a good way to build muscle and learn how to defend myself. True?

I have one of those standing heavy bags and I rarely use it but when I do it's more for a cardio workout for me.

Bags dont hit back. Or move for that matter.

It's literally just moving your arms and legs. It's like running.
The heavy bag is for practicing form and developing your wrists and knuckles.

I never said you get good at defending

Neither will you necessarily get better at actually hitting a blocking, dodging and counter-attacking target. Bag practice is pretty standard for drilling your technique, but if you've never learned proper punching in the first place it can also cement some bad habits that you might have.

Well usually when you punch for long enough punching will become something basic like walking. So youll learn how to hit the guy even when he's blocking or dodging.

>build muscle
>learn self defense
Nope. Gotta' do actual training for that. Hitting a punching bag is cardio at best unless you use it to drill in learned punching technique.
