Seems like an easy way to take form out of the equation for people that would otherwise injure themselves much more rapidly were they to use free weights.

The smith machine imposes a fixed bar path. This is fine if your natural bar path happens to match that, but it can cause issues if the way you should be moving isn't what the machine wants. Also tends to hide form issues for the same reason.

Very few lifts, like squats and bench, follow a fixed vertical pattern. This is why it's best used for things like shrugs and calf raises that have a small, veritcal range of motion.

terrible range of motion, no core involvement on squats, no stabilizer muscles, etc. really a poor choice. Plus, without the fear of death, you honestly don't end up lifting near as much and it's harder to push that last rep through when you can just "ca-chink" and end your set.

some lifts are okay-ish in it. but why bother when you can just use a real bar?

bench press is a bad idea in it. incline bench less so. overhead press even lesser so. shrugs/calves, it's fine. squats can be okay, just make sure you have the bar over your midfoot (the hardest part, don't do them with your feet in front)
