Because I'm already bulking on gasoline and really, who the fuck can afford both

So with one gram on uranium I get about million calories in a day for fifty fucking years.
>>
>>35102668
Someone explain me how the fuck that's actually possible?

somehow a radioactive substance actually has a lot of energy
suprising huh

You wouldn't be able to metabolize the uranium anyway, you would just continue needing to burn carbs, fat, and protein for energy

a calorie is only relevant in terms of energy you get from biologically breaking down nutrients.

some cheeky fuck has converted the energy released per gram of fissuring uranium from joules into calories because it's funny.

eating uranium will not provide 80bn dietary calories. it will provide 0. and then kill you.
>>
>>35103875
no because we can't metabolize it.
>>
>>35104232
Maybe it is possible for other lifeforms.

>>
>>35102668
Unfortunately eating one gram of uranium and then gaining 10 million kilograms of fat isn't part of my plan.
>>
>>35104232
a calorie is the amount of energy it takes to increase the temperature of 1g water by 1 degree you fucking retard

it has nothing to do with breaking down nutrients

other life forms ?
>>
>>35103135
e=mc^2 basically means that energy can be turned into mass, and vice versa. c is the speed of light, which is pretty large, so the upshot is that there is a fuckton of energy in just a little mass. When you use carbs, protein, or fat as energy, the energy is coming from chemical bonds between particles breaking down. The bonds aren't very energy-rich, so you only get 4-9 calories per gram. Same story with gasoline, but gasoline molecules have more and heavier bonds than carb, protein, or fat molecules. Nuclear reactors literally convert mass directly to energy, so the available energy density is much higher.

In principle, you could convert the mass in carbs, protein, and fat directly to energy too, but no one has any clue how to do it. Nuclear reactors use uranium and thorium because they're really big atoms, and the reactors take advantage of the fact that really big atoms are unstable and relatively easy to pull apart.
>>
>>35104386
Other life forms get energy from breaking down carbohydrates or moleculair bonds, can't do shit with just elements.
>>
>>35104641
>In principle, you could convert the mass in carbs, protein, and fat directly to energy too, but no one has any clue how to do it.
burn it ? The energy will come in form of heat, or I am just stupid.
>>
>>35104692
Burning gets energy from chemical bonds too. Fire is just a flashier and faster version of what goes on in your stomach.
>>
>>35104232
I was going to make fun of you for thinking that people in this thread actually thought you could metabolize uranium, but then I actually read the thread and it seems I would be wrong to do so.

>>35104585
I'm impressed that you actually did the math.

>>35104628
Nobody uses that calorie anymore, they only use the kilocalorie, or food Calorie. It's silly to use that definition.
And you do have to admit that however he phrased it, he has a point that the chemical energy in fat and carbohydrates is bioavailable, the nuclear energy in Uranium is not.

I pity how dim you are. Aliens ain't gotta be like earth life at all. Shit, it could be a synthesized lifeform that purposely eats radiation and shits death.
>>
>>35104692
The only hypothesis we have for an even vaguely useful way to get the fundamental mass energy out of matter is matter + anti-matter annihilation.
>>
>>35104811
The real question: Why aren't you annihilating existence for greater gains?

This could totally be prompt for some sci-fi shit

>Japan makes a human titan that weighs 5200000000 lbs and needs a gram of uranium a day to live
>Humanity discovers space organisms with the capability to metabolize uranium

list goes on
>>
>>35106100
I think it was shown that metabolism uranium is not a source of calories. The OP's pic showed the energy gained from metabolism UNTIL it reached uranium, then it just showed the rough energy output of the mas converted to energy.

So maybe we can find ayys that convert mass to energy, but I think uranium is off the table for anything but severe 1950s style "radiation magic."

Ala Fallout.
>>
>>35106217

I guess its more along the line of powering giant robots

>>35106249

>>35104641

If you can convert mass to energy, then skies the limit. We only think of this with uranium because it was one of the few things we are capable of converting the mass to energy. If we could do it with water as easily, we'd do that.
