I'm new to powerlifting, and want to start getting into it. There is a really cool old-school powerlifting gym in my area, and I was thinking maybe I could train at my local gym most of the time, but head over to the powerlifting club once a week for free coaching and for the community n shit.

The issue is, I am ex-anorexic and generally super weak. If I turned up with these stats as a beginner would I just be wasting the coaches' time?

A kid at my school yesterday approached me about how he and another kid are starting a weightlifting (including powerlifting / general strength training) club with the school strength coach as the club advisor.

I'm so excite.

Even though the only super strong kid at our school is a competing weightlifter, I'm excited to have the opportunity to set up training with other people who are serious about it, camaraderie, watching / critiquing lfits, etc.

Feeling happy brehs.

On an unrelated note, I dont have anything to do before I turn up at 10 and kinda wanna hit the gym but yesterday was ID.

So I think I found what happens when I overarch on bench today.
In order to touch my chest, I lose some lat tension which causes my shoulders to roll a bit forward and thus lose the good position for the ascent, leading to unintentional flare and loss of power. Happened with elbow tucking and with "natural" movement.

So, do I arch less or move hands out? I'm leaning towards less arch fåve.

I do the same, plus some hip airplanes and glute wake-up calls. Then working on the knee/hip timing during warmups. Other than that, spacing wide-stance stuff (specifically low-bar and sumo) as far apart as possible during the week seemed to help a bit.

i've found hips back is super dependent on the person. some people naturally hip hinge the right amount, and telling them to push their hips back ends up making them do it too much and really fucks with positioning. when i first started doing it my squat felt great, but eventually i did it subconsciously and when i tried to cue it it went bad. gotta determine for yourself whether its necessary or not, and i think for the longterm it isn't.

I'm about as strong as you judging from your form video, maybe a little bit stronger.
So don't take everything I say as fact, but I started hinging because of two reasons

I wanted to keep my knees inline with my toes because I have osgood schaltter disease in my knee, hinging allows me to keep my knees back.

The stretch reflex was something I never had before hinging, my hamstrings are quite short tbf but when I hinge my entire leg becomes tight, I don't feel it as much with maximal loads but when practising it's more apparent. This stops me from going too low which I used to do.

Then again if you hinge its only most effective, I've found, with feet outside of shoulder width foot positioning. That's a little wide for some, I'd rather go wider myself but can't hit depth.

It's up to you though, I'm still learning myself.

Hey friend, where did you learn your form for the power lifts?
I've been looking for some good reads on form, but so far I've only found 1 book on bench press specialisation and nothing for the squat or deadlift.
I'm an advanced lifter and feel as starting strength isn't the best to go off of.

What books have you read to learn form? Or were you coached? Does your coach have a book?
