It means having something to strive for - and figuring out how to work towards that. Having unrealistic standards is fine to a point, because it keeps people motivated and pushes them to try - they'll learn in time and adjust what they expect to get done year to year - but they don't have to stop striving for their 'ideal' body.

It's true the most pessimistic people are actually the most realistic, but they get nothing done and die alone in their parents basement.
