Hey /fa/,
Last year a few collections came out that really intrigued me - featuring a style that I think is very cool and I'd like to talk about it with you today. The style is similar to colourblocking - and some would consider it colourblocking - but the key aesthetic is taking very bright, very loud (think neon) colours and designs and blocking it with black (blackblocking). The louder and more offensive the colour, the better the result.
What is produced is bright colour (and / or an abstract design) juxtaposed against a void. It draws out the colour and sinks the rest of the garment into the background - like light escaping from a black hole. It was (in my opinion) not dissimilar to certain styles of art that mix the abstract with the dull and ordinary.
The big names that featured this (and got me into this aesthetic) were Raf's and Y3's AW14 collection. /fa/ largely dismissed Raf's AW14 collection but I think it was a big (and inspiring) "fuck you" to the bubble of monochrome that was about to burst.
I have discovered a few more since then, but no one did it so much, or as well as Raf and Y3. If you know of any other designers, please tell me.
I don't want to ramble on too long and I'm not trying to be seen as uncovering the next fashion meme - I just want to talk about the aesthetic and would like to discuss it and find out whether any other designers have been doing it.
Please leave harsh comments outside the thread.

Is Y3 by the way.
This is Kenzo - and I feel it would work better with black pants - but you get the idea.
Raf
Not exactly as bright and as much as I would like, but the ounce of red and the shoes looks good.
Possibly one of my favourites.
Y3
MMM. Would look heaps better without the white, and if the red was lighter and brighter.

>/fa/ largely dismissed Raf's AW14 collection but I think it was a big (and inspiring) "fuck you" to the bubble of monochrome that was about to burst

Doesn't really come off as a "fuck you" to monochrome to me personally
It's almost as if it was an acknowledgement to the trend, and then "flair" simply added - aka a standout article of clothing, like wearing all blak with white shoes
Or it comes off as being forced to keep up with "trends" and not at all any sort of forward thinking "fuck you"
"We're going to take the same shit, but we'll put a pretty bow on it this time"
However, that's just my $0.02
>>9306151
I'm seconding this, the contrast on a canvas of black just feels like a safe step.
That's not to say I don't find it aesthetically pleasing though, I actually really enjoy it. Though right now I'm really enjoying "pale" colours mixed with black and a few stand out colours like mustard yellow / forest green / petrol blue
>>9306151
That's a good analysis of it, and I agree it could be that.
I think either answer could be correct unless Raf ever says himself.
Also your picture has the right idea, but is too pale. I would be inclined to like it more if it was a fluro green or yellow.
Y3
>>9306163
Yeah, don't get me wrong some of it is fascinating to look at
Got any with light blue or green?
>>9306163
I actually find pale closer to monochrome in style.
Both are very inoffensive, very muted, and 'safe' - your clothes match with palewave and it's not going to draw a lot of attention.
This naturally draws attention but doesn't mismatch. There is the element of ease and safety in blackblocking because you don't mismatch colours - but there is still the scream for attention in your loud article of clothing.
I find this Raf outfit very muted. What makes it for me are the shoes.
>>9306182
The jacket holds this fit back IMO - it looks like everything underneath wants to burst out, but it's trapped
However, that could be want you want
I wouldn't be surprised if the "containment" of the jacket to the loud clothing was completely intentional
Very clever overall
>>9306176
One two. I only compiled this list last night when I decided to make the thread. I'm always looking for more though.
Also this is ss14, not aw14 - I'm dumb.
Raf x Sterling Ruby.
The top needs to be lighter green. The orange sweaters are insane though.
>this thread
lmbo wtf r u doing ;s
>>9306190
I think containment works very well, such as the OP and >>9306165
One of my fav fits.
You would love dior homme s/s14 then
>>9306184
I don't really like either of those I think.
>>9306096
Is really interesting. Considering blue is a color I haven't seen in a lot of people's fits lately. And the loud deep ocean blue and the shoes blended into the dark black is cool.
A lot of these are seemingly fits with 1 single attention grabbing eye candy piece on a setting of black which like OP said brings out the colors more and draws the eyes better than one solid slate of blacks and greys. Its refreshing.
(a shirt I used to own from the collection)
>>9306200
This is a really fun pallette, and those shoes are fire.
>>9306202
The fit with the blue is good, but it's soooo safe
>>9306204
horrible piece, at least you made some profit right
>>9306204
Thanks for the rec, and cool shirt. Would have been insane with some of bright shoes.
I just found this Issey piece. The top would be incredible if the pants were pure black. Going back to that "trapped colour" idea that was mentioned before.
>>9306210
yeah I actually did make profit lol my short stint with dior was not successful but you win some you lose some
>>9306208
Yeah, a bit safe for a runway yes. But its executed really well.
>>9306118
Looks sloppy to me. Plus I just don't like the whole Adidas three lines on anything as is. Plus the leather jacket + tech doesn't even make sense.
>>9306182
Looks good but something seems off.
>>9306133
Jacket is interesting. Didn't know Kill Bill pants were a thing
>>9306208
coming from you who just wears all black polyester shit in every single fit, this is funny af you ugly broke loser
>>9306218
>Something is off
The navy coat.
>>9306220
This isn't a thread for anger
More Issey. It seems that matching socks is important.
Dior Homme ss14
As suggested.
>>9306250
Very cool
>>9306256
One of my favourites
>>9306220
The last actual fit I posted had navy blue and two different shades of gray
Pic related
>>9306215
Love this, but ultimately those lines seem too thick
Still very monochrome but the shoes save it.
>>9306218
I know what you mean about the three lines, but like I was saying earlier - the fit is powerful and confident and I think the trademark lines of Adidas back it up
>>9306271
This feels like it falls short - it seems almost there
>>9306281
There needs to be yellow on the top. Imagine if those white lines matched the yellow of the shoes - it would be pretty incredible.
Ignore the fuccboi in the front.
>>9306296
Yeah, exactly! It would be so LOUD
I'm thinking that Raf does blackblocking the best.
>>9306308
It certainly seems like a logical direction for what he's released thus far
I'll be back later. If the thread has 404'd - thanks for listening and contributing everyone. I have some better ideas about what makes a piece good. I'll be drifting around hopefully with a bigger inspo folder.
>hey /fa/ i want to talk about this trend that everyone ignored and that i solely discovered so that you can all validate me under the guise of intellectual discussion and criticism.
>the trend is really groundbreaking: designers took really bright colors and paired them with really dark colors. it's really unprecedented and is a total decimation of all former color palettes. i call it "contrast" and i'm the only person that was able to identify it.
>i don't want to ramble too much, but please feel free to discuss how amazing i am and how flawless my highly original analyses are as i proceed to dump collection photos that "prove" my thesis
>>9306340
I was really only shining a spotlight on a style that isn't discussed at all on /fa/. I didn't mean to seem like I had discovered something incredible or look for any approval, I just wanted to talk about a particular look that I like and learn more about what makes it good.
I don't understand why you are being so hostile towards me and this thread?
>>9306355
this style is discussed all the time on /fa/. why do you think raf is a popular name here?
is sarcasm considered hostile on a 4chan board?
let me put my criticism another way. there is a marked difference between
>check out this color-blocking style that primarily uses black. any thoughts? i think it's a reaction to the popularity of monochrome
and
>so i was cruising around the RISD secret fashion-scholar library that only top cultural and artistic critics with big dongs have access to and i noticed this style that /fa/ hardly ever discusses and so i used my big wang's foreskin to scoop up all of this analysis so that ~*I*~ could be the princess of knowledge that delivers this genius gift to all of my friends on the cloth forum of a malaysian prime minister world wide website
>>9306270
which is something that Issey does regularly
over-exaggerates a design element just into the realm of outlandish or even uncomfortable, but not so crazy that the piece is not wearable
>>9306383
You're exaggerating.
I wrote a background "analysis" because I personally like it when OPs provide more information when they open up a topic of discussion, and this is a style I really like so I decided to write what I know and enjoy about it.
I'm sorry that I have caused so much offense to you that you felt the need to chew me out about my post.
>>9306397
>You're exaggerating
damn there u r again with the fantastic analysis. which part gave it away that i was exaggerating? was it the part about the big dongs being a necessary entrance requirement to a top secret library?
Very excited for the RT2 with the coloured bands.
Bumblebee-core
raf has lost the plot
>>9306448
Those panels need to be hot pink instead of photographs
