Actually feel bad for you. You're just irredeemably stupid and close minded. How can you say that designer's collections they present are not a form of art? Even if you don't believe the diluted version of those designs that trickle down to the end-user are pieces of art, its still an important way of being able to access and align yourself with the designers personal philosophy and aesthetic that he communicates with his art (rtw or hc). Watch some shows (McQueen should elucidate the idea pretty nicely) and tell me that that isn't a form of art. The designers work isn't to print a fucking catalogue, they are constantly working to create pieces that demonstrate their vision and the way they present it is a form of art.

You're not better or worse for engaging in fashion on that level but to completely deny that possibility is absurd

anyway, my point is that fashion is not, on its baselevel, art. it's design. in recent times the lines between the two are blurring. yes, it can be artistic and can even be considered art in some cases, but overall it's design. same goes for architecture, jewel making (english isn't my native language, don't know the actual name), pottery, etc. of course everything depends on your definition of what art is. in my opinion, art's only purpose is to be art. i can see how you could feel it is art, but i disagree.
deeming philosophy as essential for a clothing design is not necessarily true, but you obviously disagree on that.

However the phrase: " Art's purpose is that it is without purpose" seems to be found upon Aesthetic Theory. A dated concept in itself, overtaken by (post)modernist thinking in our day of post-conceptual aesthetics. Where a much broader definition of beauty is to be applied. I feel like the canon has shifted more towards art and it's (possibly non)motivated functions with the capability to transcend it's utilitarian applicability. Where quality is not to be defined by semantic phrases such as "pretty" or "good".

Osborn touches upon these subjects in this lecture, if you're interested and have some time to kill i'd recommend reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed it myself.

Whereas fashion in itself is a diffuse term. I believe that OP is correct in saying that one cannot appreciate fashion as an artistic endeavor to it's full extend without a base knowledge of philosophy. Same reason that most autodidact artists nowadays make pretty or be it non pretty shallow wank.

I somewhat agree. Perhaps it's artistic premise it's easier to identify as such in the form of grand gesture. Alienating itself in the process from what i believe you mean by 'real life'. Think Craig Green or Beirendonck. But think of the work of for instance Margiela, where the same qualities can be found be it in a less conspicuous manner.
