Even if your life is truly first world, and you have "room" and "luxury" for fashion - are you sure there aren't significantly better and more enriching things to do with your time? (No I don't mean go to /pol/)

So, you went to a board that discusses politics and social issues and that's what you found.

Then you came back to a board that discusses fashion and style and that's what you found.

And that surprised you?

Stay in school, kids.
>>
>>8676734
What's your career?
>>
>>8676724
The 4chan philosophy is that the people who populate a board will be dedicated to that hobby and will seem more concentrated than others.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fuccboi and still love fashion, but as much wanking as I do on here, it isn't like I sperg out nearly as hard on here than I do others.
/fa/ attracts people who love fashion, /mu/ attracts people who love music, /m/ attracts people who love mecha, and /sci/ attracts diehard science lovers. It comes off as obsessive because that is just what you will find on a board dedicated to this.
The 4Chan models fail a bit with boards like /a/, where it is muh qt girl animu all the time and /v/ which is just fucking garbage, but a lot of boards are just people who are dedicated to their hobby.
I know a few people on this board do sperg out irl, but to me it is just a hobby that I love along side my true passions and joys.
>>

Just checked out their front page and it's still the same old shit. Hating jews, blacks, feminists, etc. Boring, one-sided shit for the most part.

/pol/ gets upset about minorities the same way /fit/ gets upset about fat people. In real life, I have it good as a white boy, but they've somehow found ways to be angry about it.

If /pol/ would go to /fit/ and /fa/ to start being attractive, they'd realize that white males have nothing to worry about. Girls, jobs, judicial decisions, etc. They're all still in our favor, so idk what they're worried about. I guess I'm glad they're there to counteract the radicals on the other side, but there's hardly a reason for me to go there.
>>
>>8676800
Yeah, content overall seems in a certain place but a thread of substance there is like finding that grail inspo pic here after 6 months of lurking and you thought life wasn't worth living anymore
>>
>>8676800
>I have it good as a white boy

You having it good has nothing to do with being white you dumb fuck.
>>
>>8676772

>>
>>8676724
>no I don't mean go to /pol/

That's exactly the rub, isn't it? Just because /pol/ talks about "serious" topics doesn't mean they're not basic, daft, and superficial as fuck.

Fashion is arguably the most culturally important medium/cultural production/w/e in contemporary life; I *think* music surpasses it, but nothing else. It's more important than the other boogeymen of srs thnkrs, TV and movies.

Literally everyone participates and consumes. It's impossible not to: it is socially mandatory to be clothed and you'll be the subject of state violence if you leave your dwelling (which you must to survive) without assembling a fit. It's the #1 vector of identity and social position beyond physiognomy. Nothing else besides architecture and industrial design physically mediates one's experience of the world. Social changes have always been accompanied by changes not just in the aesthetics or style of clothing but their practical function.

http://www.rageagainstthesage.org/download/fashion%20virus.pdf

Zine I just found Googling for a picture to attach. I haven't read it thoroughly enough to be like "READ THIS THIS IS RIGHT" but it's definitely relevant and of a certain level of quality. I'm seeing a ton of Rene Girard drop, which eh, but that just goes to illustrate how deep fashion talk can go.

The problem is almost the opposite of the problem in politics - people are stuck here at the practical, and the how-to-accomplish-immediate-end. Politically, people are bogged down in MUH ABSTRACT A PRIORI 'PINIONS and seldom talk about, say, how to organize their community to stop their rent getting jacked up, or how to better educate their kids.

This is, I think, a direct result of the current narrative we're given:
>>
>>8676840

>you're disempowered, disenfranchised, the politicians are all crooked and don't listen to you peons. [This is true, the truth that suckers you in] So don't bother; you can't self-actualize through collective action. You're an independent, autonomous subject who needs to look out for #1 - and you can enhance your life, yes, even cure the essential loneliness of your condition [lol] by accumulating capital to fork over for the correct hair, the correct sneakers, the correct square of fabric, the correct jacket.

>But you don't know about any of that, you can't trust your own intuition and feeling about how the clothes feel and look on you. What do you know of quality or beauty or tactile pleasure? Let us tell you...

And so when people set out to become in their dress more self-determined they don't even know what kind of questions to ask or who to ask them to. Hence every wretched "cop or not," "is this /fa/," "lol meme shoes" shallow shitpost ever. People being driven not by healthy, vigorous conatus but by inculcated self-doubt and fear, resigned to the impotence of their desire and the impossibility of their real flourishing - precisely the same emotions involved in their political subjugation.

I think you need to rethink some things. Like why you're trying to emulate inner city culture when you're from the suburbs.
>>
/pol/ is filled with vile (yet largely harmless) white 16-25 year-olds with tons of literally evil opinions they try to pass off as sage wisdom born of world-weariness or w/e

literally just the embodiment of "i'm cynical so i'm automatically smart"
>>
>>8676823
Yes it does. Not inherently, but just the fact that I grew up in a family that has established connections to businesses and I was able to go to a good school with encouragement from those around me is something that's not as common for non-whites. Obviously you can have the reverse on an individual basis, but the differences of the populations is evident.

That just comes down to being born into a good family, but being white also means I don't have to deal with any racism where I live. I imagine it'd suck to have people drive by and shout "nigger" at you, or be followed in a store to make sure you're not stealing.

I'm not some apologist for affirmative action or any shit like that, but people love to deny that they have any advantage. The fact that I grew up around people who were happy for me when I did well on math tests was a huge advantage that plenty of kids don't have.

seriously i spent more time in lecture watching sasha grey lick toilet seats and drink her own piss, belladonna go ass to mouth and gianna micheals doing w/e she does than paying attention to shit

also in the 2 years it took me to get that third bachelor's degree, i never read or purchased a required text book

He doesn't respond to cosmonaute anymore, but there's still soundcloud.
Though I think he mostly likes to be left alone these days.
A shame, really; I liked what he had to say on writing.
>>
I keep trying to go to /pol/ because I imagine it'd be reminiscent of old /b/ and I'd get a few laughs from the troll threads and the people who are looney enough to actually buy into them

I was wrong, shits boring as hell. The one thread that ever entertained me was one about how the first missing plane flew into orbit and is going to reappear to crash into the freedom towers on 9/12 and how the second one was shot down by Israelis to distract from their warcrimes in Gaza and help pass patents for the AIDS treatment the passengers were researching over into Rothschild hands
>>
I guess I'm quite nihilistic, not in the egdy way, but since I have a very materialistic worldview I belive that we are just systems of chemical and physical reactions that exist just because they are the most likely to exist so in the end what we think is good and not is not any less random than what animals do. I find fullfilment in fine arts, because althought meaningless too, they atleast are nice while "serious" things are exhausting. Fashion is a form of art and just like I want the music I listen to to sound nice I want.the garmenta I'm wearing to look good. It's by far not my only interest and I think that the average /fa/aggot is more into other nice things than the extremists over at /pol/.

new-ish fag here, can anybody dump some poet stuff?
>>
>>8676724

haven't read the thread so i can imagine someone else has properly said this/worded it better

basically fashion, like music/cinema/arts/whatever is not only a hobby, but a life skill and to some degree an art. alongside that, we're on a south korean stopmotion board, and we're all wasting our time on something or other - not all discussion has to be serious and based on news/current events
>>
But visiting /pol/ is just as useless for politics as being here. If anything, the problem is being in 4chan instead of doing something.
>>
>>8676867

oh lighten up
>>
>>8678209

daaaaawwww
>>
>political extremist discussion of current events
>psychology and/or philosophy and/or sociology debates
>debates regarding existence of life, creation of earth / universe - space travel

there's a reason why these discussions only take place on the worst board of 4chan

pretending you have a grasp on complicated subjects will only give you a skewed perspective

it's better to just waste time on fashion
>>
>>8679823
Well, you could read about those subjects from respected sources that go beyond news site and have a reading level above HS; and then discuss them in specialized forums irl, maybe exchange letters with writers you learn to respect or consult an open class or work shop.

You can do all of that looking hot. In my experience some people will even think you are smarter if you get them horny.
>>
>>8676724

>>

The concept of "old /b/" amuses me. It's really just people remembering the retarded shit they did as a 13 year old and comparing it to the retarded shit actual 13 year olds are doing nowadays.
>>
>>8679800
Why are we even here
>>
There were a few posts in this thread that challenged me to think more critically about fashion. Perhaps, to really grasp the basic concept, it's about how someone approaches a subject rather than the subject itself that makes something shallow or deep.

Your "business connections and good schools" bullshit isn't white privilege, it's privilege of the wealthy. Asians in New York are rapidly becoming some of the most elite - Foreign billionaires send their non-white children off with excellent education and a massive trust fund.

Both of these issues are economic in nature.
As for discrimination, it's clearly racism, but use of the term "white privilege" draws away from the central truth that majority settlers will always have privilege; and points it towards "white people are always privileged".

You're vastly oversimplifying all this and would do yourself well to read literally anything on the concept of intersectionality.

Wealth is one form of privilege. Whiteness is another. International status is another, and so is native status. It's all about the functioning of particular situations.

Simplest, rightest definition of privilege I've heard is "unearned advantage."

>>8681815
>draws away from the central truth that majority settlers will always have privilege; and points it towards "white people are always privileged".

This is such ahistorical tripe. In the Americas, the majority settlers are Whites. Everywhere else, White-coded Europeans were the colonizers, although usually not settlers.

>Fashion is arguably the most culturally important medium/cultural production/w/e in contemporary life;
LOL. No.. High fashion / mainstream fashion is a joke, culturally.

If you mean subculture fashion, maybe. But, that's not something this board talks about. By the time this board talks about it it's being packaged and sold to them by a designer who was inspired by the subculture you never knew existed.

/pol/ suffers the same trappings that /fa/. You really have to wade through the troughs of endless anti feminism, cuck threads and anti-Islam shill posts to really reach the cutting edge of discussion. And of course you will find more abstract and interesting topics; politics encompasses everything from occultism to philosophy. Fashion - like most forms of art - doesn't have the tangible quality and scope of discussion and you'll always find the best threads are great because they veer into meta discussions like this (and poets threads of course).

The accessibility of fashion also kills the probability of gaining new insight because it inevitably becomes flooded and diluted by scared, unadventurous plebs who want to buy roshe sneakers and look like their favourite house niggler, Kanye West.

>High fashion / mainstream fashion is a joke, culturally.

Care to make an actual argument for that? Because 1) that's not and 2) you gut it in your own post. If you buy the "packaged and sold by a designer" command economy model of culture, which was never really true and is becoming less and less true every blessed day, that means high fashion, the whims the ideologies of the politburo, is the most important and serious thing out there.

More to my point,

>If you mean subculture fashion, maybe. But, that's not something this board talks about.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. This board is *driven* by subcultural fashion. Every week you get fuccbois trying to make a "new" stylistic fetch happen.

And Internet fashion as a whole is subcultural fashion. You have to be in certain social circles to know "jawnz," or who Nickelson Wooster is, or that or why him posting a video of himself in full Rick Owens was a big thing.

But all that is also beside the point. That whole discourse is obsolete, weighed down by cultural narratives that no one functions on anymore. "High," "sub," "mainstream," it's all below our back horizon, like "brows" and "cults."

And *I* don't have the time to develop my argument rn, but just look at the fashion consciousness of ten years ago and the fashion consciousness now. Look at the Internet and dwn the street in any fashion-conscious city.

https://warosu.org/fa/thread/S7162112#p7162273

Thing I wrote ages ago that develops a similar theme to what I would/might write here later.

As far as the idea that "consumption isn't impact and isn't important" - please, what world do you live in where fashion exists outside consumerism and isn't driven by the market and how do I get there?

Also, styling is a creative act and everyone gets dressed in the morning.
>>
>>8688636
Lastly for now:

"You are also vastly over estimating the amount of people in the world, successful people, who actually give a fuck about fashion."

It sounds like you're using a basic bitch definition of successful, but two quick counterexamples:

- Investment bankers and lawyers may or may not actually care about capital-F fashion, but dress code and attention to detail in clothes is famously strict in both professions in the major leagues.

- Steve Jobs struck up a personal friendship with Issey Miyake after he hired Miyake to design a uniform for Apple employees, which all the engineers (decades ago) laughed out of existence. One thing did come of it, though - those turtlenecks that were his own uniform were a custom Miyake design.

The government runs on monopoly money anyway, and I'm not even talking about how it's fiat currency, I'm talking about how it runs on an arbitrarily large debt that functions not as a normal set of financial instruments but as a mutual, effectively endless, of indefinite duration economic chokehold with the PRC neither state can willingly break.

If it can pull some extra numbers out of its ass to feed children fleeing a drug war it created, why shouldn't it?

This I can half agree with. But seeing whats current in style is powerful. It grants you positioning in social life you otherwise wouldn't deserve. You do however NEED to have this social life to begin with, and if you don't because you don't have the money then aesthetics are indeed 'superficial' to you, it would be counter-productive to focus your energies on what you're wearing, but that just means you're poor.

That being sad /fa/ is a failed experiment. An anonymized chan just can't facilitate quality discussions of taste which has everything to do with talking to ACTUALLY tasteful individuals, and there's just no way of confirming if a person is tasteful on an anonymized chan. Even WAYWT which is the must durable thread concept on this chan, is terrible for taking personal style out of individual context an into a thread of endless basic generic internet style.

Don't take my word for it, but please do realize you will eventually know how pointless your time is spent here
>>
fashion is the most superficial part of self-actualization

I wish /fa/ was more open to discussing the ways our minds engage with fashion, rather than boiling it down to the ill-defined and simplistic "fashion = whatever looks good", but I continue to post here because I do care about clothing and I think that it would be to the detriment of the board if people leave as soon as they feel a little too old for the board culture. to some extent the older and more thoughtful posters have a duty to remain here and try to elevate the discussion

working class whites get a shitty deal

they get lumped in with the rich asshole whites (who actually did the bad stuff) because they have the same skin color, then disowned by them because they're "white trash" or "rednecks", etc. They have the lowest chances of getting admitted to colleges because quotas work against them and they don't have any of the economic privilege that might help them build a good resume of extracurricular activity and so on. Everybody hates them, nobody takes them seriously, all because the colour of their skin robs them of the right to claim an underprivileged status.

I'm upper middle class white, actual privilege, etc. But it strikes me as really unfair. When I hear some starbucks-drinking dipshit say something nasty about "rednecks" (because don't you know that poor rural whites are responsible for systematic racism?) it sounds only a little better to me than if they'd been complaining about "niggers".

To name only one double standard we have: it's (rightly) considered tasteless to make fun of 'ebonics', but lower-class white dialects are fair game for ridicule. Is that fair?

the sjws are humourless dickheads but they're not always wrong. central languages are imposed on speakers of similar but non-central versions of that language (labelled "dialects" because it makes them sound less legitimate) or other languages -- that's how national languages are established. A powerful group makes their language the standard and everyone else needs to fall in line. In fairness, this is necessary for a nation to function. But making fun of people because their English is a bit different... well, if that makes any sense to you, then you're ignorant (of how and why dialects exist) or you're a cunt. Likely both
>>
>>8696147
Except Ebonics isn't a true dialect. Ebonics is pure broken English. There's a fine line between a group from another region modifying a national language to adapt, and a native group (American Blacks) purposefully butchering a language out of laziness. I know several ghetto blacks who refuse to use Ebonics because it disgusted them. They know the truth about their own cultures faults.
>>
>>8696171
your argument rests on the idea that one version of English is inherently the language of the whole United States. this is why I mention the nationalist conception of the national language -- it's the basis of how you think about them "learning" their "native" language

the truth is your native language is the one your parents and friends speak. which is not always "correct" English.
>>
>>8696194
The general consensus is in the US is that you ask 'How are you?" as opposed to "How you be?" or" How you is?". Evey basically educated person in the US knows this from NY to CA.
>>
>>8696205
#rekt
>>
>>8696205
it was also not "correct" to end a sentence with a preposition for a long time

every language speaker knows how to make their language work for them. "How you be" makes perfect sense if you accept a different set of conjugations for "to be", which some people do. It is only "wrong" because it is different from a commonly accepted standardized form of English.
>>
>>8696232
You're really grasping at straws here, Do you think that shit would fly at a university level English class? No, because it's wrong. Why are you so keen on defending SJW's and lazy black, white, and other uneducated trash?
>>
>>8696232
Also

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gv0H-vPoDc#t=29
>>
>>8696251
I think his reasoning is pretty valid. Language evolves over time. In this inter-connected age, it evolves even faster. As long as speakers can understand each other, I don't see cause for concern.
>>
>>8696251
where did I defend SJWs? I happen to agree with them on one point; I find their attitude is generally beneath contempt, however.

I'm not saying that all the various dialects should be made standard and acceptable in the academic realm. Most people aren't looking for university approval anyway. The point is that all you can do to argue that they're wrong is point to powerful institutions and say "they don't recognize the validity of this form of English, and they have authority". It can't be wrong in the way that 2+2=5 is wrong, or even in the way that an understanding of History can be wrong. The worst you can say is it's non-standard and not as practical as an education in standardized English. Which is a fine thing to say. But it doesn't justify you calling people lazy, stupid, whatever.
>>
>>8696285
>>8696289
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Gv0H-vPoDc#t=29

I'll agree with you about the validity of language through 'powerful institutions', but Ebonics IS wrong in that it uses objectively incorrect grammar.

>>
>>8696373
Even most of /pol/ knows the difference between niggers and blacks. All this "anti-black" talk is really directed towards the violent ghetto thugs that contribute nothing to society. People just automatically jump to the conclusion that when /pol/ talks niggers, they're talking about all blacks, which is so wrong. There are good and functional blacks but the problem with the black race is that the functional to dysfunctional ratio is so off, just look at the bell curve. It doesn't help either that most blacks carry a gene linked to violence and poor impulse control(MOAA?) It really is pitiful though to observe black society because it isn't really their fault that they are acting that way because their genetic makeup damned them to be that way.

Mainstream fashion describes a generation as well as music, film, and politics from that era.

The 50s didn't have a substantial transformation in fashion as it was a conservative decade, where conservative politics dominated the nation with people like Dwight Eisenhower and Thomas Dewey gained great influence. Film and music remained conservative as well where bubble gum pop remained popular through the end of the decade.
