A bun and a top knot are tied differently. It has absolutely nothing to do with the length of your sides.
If I find my camera, I might tie my hair up into a bun, then a top knot to show the difference if you'd like.

Why does no one do ponytails? They are /fa/ if only because it shows you don't care enough to put it in a bun. That's actually not true I really only do them because buns are finicky. 14 months or so of growth, I get compliments all the time on my hair. I'm really glad I stuck with it but it's still not as long as I want it to be (it rests on my shoulders when let down).

The awkward phase was more than awkward. My senior yearbook photo is atrocious thanks to my hair but it's been a long time since then.
