Not commenter #1 here, but I'm leaning more towards pomade. His hair looks shiny and wax is more of a matte finish.

Go to a store that sell hair products for blacks, or just go on Amazon.
Get some Royal Crown Pomade or Royal Crown Hairdressing. (It's almost exactly the same stuff).
That is some period accurate hair product they were using back then.

FYI: if you want to get it out of your hair shampoo BEFORE you wet your hair with water. Rinse it out, shampoo again. Dish soap is another thing to use.

It wasn't really made to wash out of your hair every night.
