Most "custom" pieces usually look like shit, because the image doesn't look right or flow right or doesn't have enough strength, there's a reason why tattoos like hearts with daggers through them or skulls or that crawling panther are still around, because the imagery and the design are strong and look good or look "right" And it's ok if you have the same tattoo as someone else because it's not gonna be EXACTLY the same, do to the human process, or "putting your hand to it" so to speak

Just be cautious of "fad tattoos" and you'll be ok

You can never go too wrong when you pick something with some sort of history to it because if it's lasted that long it should be able to last for you, instead of the dood that got that generic watered down "tribal" sleeve that isn't really tribal so much as just curvy spikey intertwining lines that looks very dated, or some Pinterest design your gf got and now regrets

I wasn't talking about flash or classic tattoos, I was talking about copying the exact same tattoo someone else's got. There's a difference between a concept (like hearts with daggers, snakes, etc) that is classic but was drawn by a tattooer and getting a pic off of google and getting exactly that. I agree that some custom concepts are ugly, but a good tattoo artist will be able to make a good design custom for you, if it's not something escessively stupid. Hell, I saw a good tattoo of a transformer riding a pony!
Imho getting a photo of someone elses tattoo and getting that tattooed is disrespectful. Both to the artist that drew that in the first place and to the person that has it. The only exception to this is if you get a band logo or something like that, something that can't really be made different
