too many things drive factors to pin it down to any single organization or occasion.

It's a mostly democratic process with a number of prominent personalities among the herd. Culture, climate, convenience, necessity and basic human desires all factor into the things we decide to wear. Regional trends shape global trends which shape regional trends. People get sick of certain styles and disassociate themselves from them and new ones rise to take their place.

Some dudes have to wear the latest designer releases to feel confident about themselves and others will get laid wearing a pair of heelys to a party. So at the end of the day, really it is you who decides whats fashionable.
