I live in southern cali in the 805/818 Malibu Conejo Valley area. About 45 mins north of LA if that helps. Usually have to travel closer to the city to find anything worth copping, this shirt was just a fluke (assuming it doesnt say some absolute crazy shit in japanese)

Front (guessing in the dark):

Back (also guessing):

Both are read from top to bottom, right to left.

You can see the backside shares the first two lines with the front side, but the third line is entirely new, so crossing a few of my guesses might take you further.

Looked like poetry to me, and according to >>12651019's link, it's an excerpt from Genji's Tale, perhaps the most famous traditional story from Japanese literature.

That might make things a bit easier: it's all written in Hiragana (no kanji). But it might also be trickier: I don't know if there were old hiragana that are no longer in use. The 乃 looks pretty much like a 乃 to me, and if that's the case,
this is the old version of の, for instance.
You'll have to google around and see what comes up, just bear in mind the symbols 水 and 花 that I guessed earlier are probably not there, since they are kanji.

Moon Rune reader here. That's like ultra-cursive calligraphic art script that's pretty much impossible to make heads or tails of, even for native speakers/readers. I can make out 水 (kanji for water,) and a handful of kana (phonetic characters,) but it's mostly indecipherable to me.

I must admit at some point I thought these could be a random guy's calligraphy practice canvas, and they sold these beginner sketches for baka gaijin who wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyways. Kinda like those shitty english shirts we see around, mainly on Asians.
So I was also impressed to learn what it really was, it originally cost someone around 30 dollars for that shirt.
