Jeans and a couple of nice t-shirts, but overall it just boils down to what your into, i would suggest flannels but that's because i dig them, some people makes shoes a priority and that's fine, but get what you both like, fit comfortably and synegizes with your outfits/styles OP

It really depends on your age, environment and lifestyle, but this is what I would get for myself.

a proper wardrobe should consist of:

>home wear (what you wear at home, to sleep, when you have no plans of leaving your home, etc.)*

>out wear (what you wear to leave the house, do tasks, go shopping, visit friends/relatives, etc.)*

>professional (what you'd wear to work settings, business ventures, etc.)*

>formal (what you'd wear to weddings, events, funerals, etc.)*

>athletic (fitness/sporting gear)

>cultural (anything that denotes your culture, if applicable)

>special purpose (swimsuits, lingerie, sanitation suits, etc.)

if you're starting from scratch, focus on the 4 fundamentals first (*). lean towards neutral colors at first until you can begin to add color. focus on quality over quantity, and try not to put too much towards one category while disregarding the others.

There you have it, all for 500$. Just remember to buy your top pieces in plain colors. These pieces combined will make up for very basic fits, but it's a good starting point. You can add in another pair of shoes, like plain white trainers, for fewer top pieces but that's up to you.
