Twardowski legend is older than Faust but probably based on the same myth/archetype - man pacting with devil for something (usually to be immortal) and tricking devil at the end.

Olgierd from The Witcher is based on Twardowski legend, he has german sounding name since Twardowski is belived to be based on real figure - german scholar/magican who came to Poland - Laurentius Dhur.
Twardowski -Tward can be translated to hard/durable and Dhur coming from Durentius/durable - you get it now.
Also in game you have Olgierd von Everett - Ever-ett - Ever is durable (Olgierd is partially immortal in game)

I liked the game and book for this. It's not some bullshit made-on-the-knee stories, they are deeply anchored in culture.
