/fa/ approved hobbies? what do you guys do in your spare time?
>>
>>12594952
anything that is challenging and mentally stimulating imo
>>
>>12594959
some examples please?
>>
>>12594965

writing, photography, filmmaking, painting, woodworking, literally anything

do what you like doing, but make sure that you are doing things that are challenging and ultimately rewarding. basically avoid things like netflix or gaming. these aren't hobbies, they are forms of entertainment that ultimately provide the illusion of satisfaction without actually requiring any work to be put into them.
>>
Read, write music, i wanted to do filmmaking but i don't have the money
>>
>>12594952
I skate transition and do occasional photography and art but I try not to be too pretentious about it. it doesnt matter what you do as long as you do SOMETHING with your mind and body, not one or the other (video games or lifting respectively) and just dont be a pretentious dickbag about it like those spandex road bikers

I draw, doodle and paint,
It helps when I find myself overly anxious or stressed out
I also like designing and making fashion pieces and tailoring and DIYing my clothes as well
I've always wanted to get into producing my own DnB and House music as a hobby, seemed like it would be fun to do and throw onto YouTube or sound cloud for ppl to enjoy.

I recently got a Stratocaster guitar and have been learning how to play 90s grunge,

And I love cars and cafe racer motorcycles and modding and racing them
And I really enjoy watching and practicing combat sports like mma/kickboxing/judo/bjj etc
I'd like to learn how to make mid 20th century/minimalist furniture

Sulking about my anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia and deep self hatred
Spend literal hours a week staring at myself in the mirror judging my thin, wispy, receding hairline that a buzz probably can't even fix due to my JUST hairline.
Looking up self improvement techniques (mostly lifting routines and dieting meal prep stuff) that I will never attempt or at least fail quickly at
Fap constantly because it's something that feels good only to be sad and ashamed directly after due to knowing that my anxiety stops me from getting it up for anyone
Browsing /fa/ and /fit/ for the last 5 years, but never posting because I'll be ridiculed.
Smoking weed to make the pain temporarily go away and to allow me to enjoy video games for a short amount of time.
Sleeping 4 hours a night on workdays and then sleeping till 2pm on days off.

The one positive thing is that I know my family and friends love me even though I hide behind a false wall of smiles and laughter, though some of my friends are starting to catch on that I'm dying inside. Luckily this will stop me from offing myself because I'm a empathetic pushover and pleasing others and making sure they're not upset with me outweighs the crippling disgust I have for myself.

Anything that you actually care about.

I like going to thrift shops/yard sales and flea markets just trying to find neat items.
Rock hounding/basic mining. You can make a pretty coin, get some nice pieces and give good, genuine gifts that typically don't cost you anything.

Woodworking, reading, writing, pipe smoking and etc.

Just get out there, find what you like and fucking do it.

Went though a really bad breakup with a girl i was living with and almost ended up homeless since I was in a different city and didnt know anyone,

so I ended up having to move to my mom's house in a different city which is 5hrs away, cause I didn't have anywhere to go and now im just saving up money working at a clothes shop for barber school which I hope I can start in Sept then after that get a tattooing apprenticeship

So wish me luck it's been fucking stressful and lonely as hell but as long as I can do something I enjoy like giving ppl effay haircuts and tattoos, and making clothes and furniture, and have enough money for a decent place and fun sporty/muscle car and a decent gf I'm happy

Running, calisthenics, bjj, and the guitar are my hobbies. They aren't really /fa/ but all have helped me build confidence and perspective I think

Doesn't matter what you do if you look good doing it t b h. Generally, productive hobbies (intellectually, creatively, physically) are the way to go. People whose only hobbies are things like video games tend to get depressed because as soon as the power's off, all the accomplishments and skill you've developed mean nothing

>>
Find inspo
Find skincare
Read stories
Visit malls and restaurants

Honestly, most things I do nowadays revolve around looking good and consuming consuming consuming. Back then, I used to draw. I also wanted to make comics and share stories to other people, but I get so stressed with my situation these days that I often feel like I NEED to de-stress myself, and buying crap is the easiest thing to do compared to actually creating something. It's like eating junk food then crashing straight to bed after you've gotten tired from your 9-hour shift. I need to sort this out
>>
I play board games and mtg with friends. Recently got into rubiks cubes, which is far from fa but fun self improvement. Learning bass guitar and writing shitty poetry. I need a real life and a better job.

i mostly read and study things i'm interested in.
running is also nice, i run every other day, reduces bf% and improves cardiovascular health.
play guitar and piano, albeit i've lost motivation for the latter tbqh
used to go out with friends but i've rather distanced myself from them so that's not that easy anymore
video games generally aren't effay but if you play them every once in a while with people you know its cool.

I find it odd that kids who are "into" games don't actually play them and just watch others play them while giving them money for some reason.

Millennials are the weirdest bunch of kids ever
>>
>>12603038
Millenials are people who are aged 22+

they are more accurately described as hipsters who browse buzzfeed, have a fondness of everything vintage, and going outdoors or to coffeeshops/cafes and stuff like that.

Gen Z (under age 22) are the ones you are describing. Especially under age 17.
>>

Not /fa/

I'm an old man:

Picked up hunting, ar-15 and a Martin compound just some. no name carbon fiber arrows on a "rage" folding broadhead took down a decent sized buck.

Disc golf, got lost found an Innova store in rancho Cucamonga and throwing frisbees at baskets is fun turns out you can play 24/7 in socal with parks everywhere.

Used to have African greys to breed but my dad got a little old and i got busy and that was our thing so I sold the birds to someone else.

I cycle, I have a litespeed vortex titanium framed bike, but I mostly just do it for health reasons. Used to be out of shape and fat.

I obviously shoot recreationally

Trying to read more, I used to a lot then kinda stopped when I got to college

Shit I don't do that I would call effay: martial arts/boxing, running, making music, any casual organized sports, motorsports/cars, hiking

Not effay = photography. The bar for entry is so low that any idiot with a decent camera calls himself one now. I have one friend that is a real photographer and the dude climbs mountains and camps out in the rain and shit to get his shots. Most people just take pictures of brick walls in sepia and call it art.

And shit like smoking, drinking, and playing video games are not fucking hobbies. This is shit most people do anyways in their spare time. Think about it this way: If you do something a lot, is it considered a good or a bad thing? Will it benefit you in some tangible way? Someone who drinks a lot is an alcoholic, someone who hikes a lot is an active, fit person.

>>12595989

>>
Here it goes OP, and this is just my opinion so feel free to take it with a grain of salt. I'm just typing out of my ass

Be yourself, be confident in who you are, have some humility, don't sweat things too much, try for self improvement (for yourself, not so much other people), and have fun. That's it. I feel that if you try for those things, any hobby is fine. And that does include gaming and anime, but, you know, for those things to really be a hobby you have to like them on more than a surface level.

For example, if you like games or anime because you just want to shut off your brain and kill time, I think that's more just entertainment than a hobby. If you like games because you like being competitive, you like going to local fighting game tournaments, it's something you use to socialize with friends, or you're legitimately interested in them as an art form, that's a fine hobby. If you like anime because you have an interest in animation in general, or you like Japanese culture, or you just have a love on cinema on a deeper level, I'd also think that could be a good hobby.

Just do your thing, and try not to take things too seriously.

>I play on the football team for my university (Div 1 FCS)

I seriously envy you -- if you're a starter, anyway.

Wish I would've played football in HS and gotten into college with it.

I started a bit over half the games last season. Lots of competition at my position and I was up against a guy who got drafted to the NFL this past year (he was injured a bunch which is why I started as much as I did).

I enjoy it but its not all its cracked up to be. Its a year-round commitment and it takes up a ton of my time. A lot of guys quit after a year or two cause they want to get on with their lives. They want to party and have girlfriends and go home on weekends and shit. I know some guys on the team stick with it cause its the only way they can afford school. And there's tons of guys that were stars at their respective high schools then get cut after a few days when they get to college. Shit is stressful as fuck a lot of the time

>going on hikes by myself
i do this all the time and people think i'm crazy
i get the bus into town and i find a street and just walk down it, and just see where i end up
i feel like it's the best way for me to get over my intense laziness
over 2 years of doing it pretty much twice monthly and i still find little areas of my city i've never visited full of interesting shops nd shit
like a few months ago i found this chinese supermarket tucked in between a load of flats and i've been going back there ever since, wasting any spare change i have saved on cans of chinese herbal tea and weird korean ramen
if you ever feel super bored or worthless just sat around doing nothing i'd recommend it, just make sure you take google maps and some money so you can get home fine and just go walking

watching people play video games competitively (esports) is pretty mentally stimulating imo as most esports are so complex and in depth when it comes to strategy, watching and analysing that is pretty good imo, and keeping up with the competitive scene of an esport and it's teams is the same as keeping up with regular sports imo
although i have a feeling you're talking about lets players which i agree is pointless

>Books
Depends on what kind of books.

>Travelling
Travelling is NOT an hobby. Everyone would travel if they could, but most people don't have either the time or money to do so.

>Hiking
Any physical activity that you do alone is /fa/, imo, but yeah if you hike to look at nature and stay alone in the silence that's quite /fa/.

>Cooking
Overrated. Being able to cook well is definitely /fa/ but people who say their hobby is "cooking" are usually full of shit.

>Photography
You're not a photographer just because you've got an expensive camera

Also
>Anime isn't effay except these 2-3 things I know
>Video games aren't effay and if you do it more than X amount of time it's unacceptable
There's nothing wrong with anime or video games themselves, as long as you're not a sperg obsessed with them they can legitimately enrich you.

>Not anime (cowboy bebop and studio ghibli are the only acceptable ones)
This is like the /a/ equivalent of saying I only wear supreme.
You can't call liking a show and a studio a hobby.
Now if you actually invest yourself into fundamentally understanding the history and philosophy behind a medium rather than coming off like an uneducated normalfag then you could say it's a hobby.
No need to reach if it's not something you like.

Using your time wisely and learn something new.
>learn tailoring
>learn programming
>learn video editing
>learn languages
>getting new degrees/phd

Traveling is shit hobby because people who work can only travel for 30-40 days max and this normally divided in two-three vacations. Def. not enough to get even a small grasp of another culture and country.

Vidya, movies and reading is fine, as long as you do it to relax after work. It should add fun to your life, not become one.

Yeah, I think this is good advice. You don't amount a complete satisfaction through these activities. You need to put layers and intentions to these hobbies, if so. Example is competitive video games or settling into a games story/gameplay from an analytical stand point, where you see satisfaction by marking achievements either by improving or learning about a game.
Similarly, binge watching series can be similar, but different as you cannot use it as an interactive media. Then you can use tools of analysis of the movie/series, learning movie making techniques, behind the scenes etc . as a surplus to just passively watching. Makes it much more complicated and fun to explorer a certain directors movies, if you see it through a lens of curiosity to his style.

Else my advice would be to not dwell in what appears fun, just do what you like to do. Whether or not it's creating collages of scandinavian birds or hiking, if it keeps your mental health grand.
