Why do people follow fashion trends?
people don't have their own style

cuz its fucking cool. even the most fashionable people follow trends.
It's fun and dumb people will think you're in the know whereas cool people will think you're a vapid cunt. It's a tangled web we humans weave you faggot

They think if they wear clothes others consider to be cool, then they themselves will be cool as well.

Because they've made the mistake of thinking trending equals good. Not all trends will look good on a given person, but they don't understand enough about colour theory and silhouettes to get that.
Follow fashion trend is keeping up with time, kinda fun when you have strangers wearing same pieces similar to uniform. I don't do it, and there is one thing that is worse than following trend: Having your entire clothing dressed based the current trend.
Because it's safe, gets normies attention, and makes the wearer feel slightly better about themselves.
I blame Instagram
For me I don't think it's so much that I don't have my own preferences it's that I waste money on stupid things and enjoy acquiring and wearing new clothes.
For example I sorta-kinda wanted an ma-1 but never enough to cop one. Then everyone was wearing bombers so I thought "Fuck it" and copped one.
The trend gives you the opportunity to try something new that will likely have a mildly positive outcome.
Doing "your own thing" will likely have a neutral to negative outcome.
FYI I think I do more trend-defying than trend-following.
It's not as if defying will necessarily cost you less time and money, either. The ma-1 I bought was on sale whereas going out of my way to acquire unusual things can be time and cash expensive.
