Never tried it on fleck before, but I've had success using "rit dye" on cordura and similar thick nylon fiber materials. It's gonna oversaturate tho, so don't expect the splotches to be as defined as the original

Is acrylic paint good enough to paint on black cowhide-leather? I got a biker jacket for 10€ and since I already have one in the same style, I'd love to paint Discharge's artwork for "Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing" on the back. I already have some basic acrylic paint on hold, would that be enough?
>>
>>12584360
Acrylic paint will crack after a while. If that's the look you want, then it'll work fine. Otherwise, they make paints specifically for clothes and leather. I would recommend getting some of that for a long lasting paint job.

Have you checked the pastebin?

Speaking of the pastebin
>[serger optional?]
>Is it necessary to own a serger?
In the beginning a serger isn't necessary. You can practice different seam finishes to hide raw edges or use the zigzag if your machine has that function. A serger is only necessary if you're going to work with knits, in which case you should get one with a coverstitch features. It's yet another investment, so wait until you have finished some projects. It has it's advantages. The finishing on the edges look better and you sew faster with this machine. Regard the machine as an addition, not as a replacement.

What fabrics fall under knits? What are other minimal requirements of a serger? Any spelling errors?

Are you serious ?
Get parka
Get dye
Do what dye says

Isn't dyed flektarn a dead meme anyway, I've started seeing people wearing milsurp jackets out and about

I used dylon. I put half the pack in for a short wash and then the other half in for an extra long wash but that was just to make sure it didn't go pitch black. I would say just put it all in in one go though

Picrel

It looks dark green in day light and black at dusk quite nice how it changes throughout the day

Thinking of using deep learning to create some graphics and then print on t-shirts.
Maybe use a Generative adversarial network aka GAN to generate some pics and then print them.
Or take some mid and lower level filters of a conv net, that's a bit more boring tho.
Anyone familiar with deep learning here?

Btw, what are some good t-shirts to print on, or what is a good website for printing?
>>
>>12584675
if you're going to order online, you'll usually get gildan, fruit of the loom, or hanes.

if you're going to bring shirts into a print shop, you can buy some better quality ones online. Bella + Canvas has good quality tees made in america if you care about country of origin.
>>
>>12584708

It also tends to crack.

Idk why those black Bloc idiots don't paint their clothes more often.

Pretty similar to milspec IR detection resistance standards

Prevents micro-particle -> propellant based tear gas from setting in their clothing

That and you can paint your blood type/nkda on their pants

But then again they're libtards and all they know is punk clothing

And are doing shit like putting drywall resprators and bandannas soaked in vinegar rather than you know...use science

Has anyone here heard of STORY mfg? In their latest production journal 'Embroidery at the nunnery' they write:

>I'm not always sure what people mean when they say 'hand made'. I was talking to someone recently who said their clothing was all hand-made, because it was guided by hand through a sewing machine - which would make almost all clothing in the entire world 'hand-made'. To me, at least, saying clothing is 'hand' -something is to say it's made by hand in the most basic way possible, where the gesture of the hand is evident in the work left behind. Our hand-spun garments are made from cotton turned into yarn by hand creating an uneven texture. Our hand-woven garments reflect every hand movement including all the little pauses where say a cup of tea was taken on a break. Our hand-dyed garments all have an ever-so slightly different shade, the colour judged by eye and touch. You get the idea.

That got me thinking. I buy my fabrics at the local sewing store, but I don't have any control over them. It's always a question whether the store has the fabrics I want for my project. Does it feel nice on the skin? Is it the right colour? I don't know where the fabrics come from. Under what working conditions were these fabrics made? Sure, I can use bleach, dylon or natural dyes to change colour, but there’s always a hassle with the composition of the fabrics. God forbid it’s synthetic. How can I, who doesn’t own a company, spin and weave my own fabrics? I figured I could send them an email about this.

In addition, they participated at Care-tags and I see comments on this board saying that Instagram is the death of internet fashion fora, so I could ask them what they think of the role of internet fashion fora today. Also, I’d like to know how they managed to stay afloat for three years. Any questions I should change or add?
>>
>>12584378
God damn I love that flannel, how did you do it? I tried to bleach a jumper but it didn't work very well
>>
>>12589449
handmade is a tricky thing to classify, as most people use sewing machines to complete one or more parts of their projects. Although I'd say if you're making a shirt or pants, you'd generally be better off making them with a machine as you get consistent stitch size and tension. Leather goods can be made by hand with a high degree of accuracy though. You can also take into account that some companies use lexan sheets instead of patterns to cut and sew/serge parts of garments in mass production.

anyways, i thought I'd drop by and give you guys a few updates, the corduroy jacket is almost finished, with just the main zipper, lining, waistband, and collar left. It's been quite the journey and somewhat of a trial by fire, but I'm glad to see it's nearing completion. I've also got some leather goods planned, and possibly a sleeve swap for an older jacket I customized as ideas for later.

almost done. needs fabric lining and the waistband, then my first scratch project will be complete. the fit is a little weird and the collar is much too wide, but I'm happy with it anyways.
>>
>>12591766
Why does it fit weird? Can't you alter the collar?
>>
>>12591996
the fit somehow manages to be baggy in the back yet tight in the front when zipped, but if I take the back panel in, it's going to look odd when the zipper's open. And the collar hole I cut was too large, so unfortunately it looks a little strange. While I could re-do the collar, I'd need to re-order elastic which took almost two weeks to ship last time I ordered. Although with the collar so large, it's got a sort of lunar look to it, like I could wear an aircraft or motorcycle helmet and the collar would line it perfectly.

>An idea:
You should come up with a message, binary (or m-ary) encode it into a carrier frequency (picture the sinusoid it makes in the time domain), bury it in white noise, then implement an algorithm to find the signal in the noise, maybe a deep Q-learner where you can show the noised signal on top and then graphically show the 0th, 10th, 100th, 1000th iteration of the learner.

I just bought a porter/undercover wallet but I really don't want to use it's obnoxious Velcro closures. I was thinking of removing the Velcro strip entirely, but this is a rare collab item and id rather keep it intact. What options do I have for covering the velcro while still keeping the function of the flap? My only other idea would be to cover maybe half of the strip with an unused Velcro, but there's got to be a better way.
>>
>>12594410
that probably is the best way, get some velcro and cut it to the right size and cover it up.

Well done, my friend. I love the spaceagey feel with the combination of really substantial color. Not done enough in the lunar subgenre.

The only potential suggestion I have, and this is only for a slight consideration: have you thought about a slightly more substantial collar? I like the height, but having it a little more stuffed and rigid (more "tubular" I guess) would go well.
>>
>>12598289
Was supposed to be double the height, ran out of material though, so I cut what I had in half and now its only about an inch and a half high vs 3. Would have been the same height as the cuffs. I don't mind much though, seems like a motorcycle helmet or scarf would go over it well.

This is fucking cool
Feels like a space pirate or space smuggler-core

It's times like these that makes me happy that I got a singer sewing machine for $30 at a pawn shop

Just did my 1st little DIY project a few weeks ago, just some simple distressing on my joggerjeans, really liked how they came out just want to add more white strings of cotton so it pops more.

>Pic related, only pic I could find of "before/after" this was before I washed and dried it so the white string of cotton aren't pulled out and fluffed out the way they are now, I also did both legs, and don't mind my roommate lol
>>
>>12598471
I don't recall ever posting my drawings, in fact, my original specs called for a cascading sleeve which I deemed a little too difficult and impractical. It took two weeks to source materials, and then I worked sporadically in the space of the two weeks after. So just under 1 month. The materials cost about $80 USD, although I used about half of the corduroy, so actually probably only $60.

>>12598448
This looks pretty cool.

The original idea was to mimic the issey miyake cargo bomber but with a more colorful and feel good approach. Corduroy has a strong association with the 70s, and the saturated maroon color makes for a very warm look. I also have a corduroy baseball jacket I bought, but it has buttons on the front, and two instead of four cargo pockets, which also helped inspire the design.

>>12598448
This is cool but I'm not 100% sure how this would translate, especially with a collar split in the middle. I could make a mockup though. If it pans out, ill post it.

>>12598485
Thanks anon. I was aiming for a jacket that had both a space and a 70s feel to it, and it has a nice amount of weight for the winter.

>>
I'm finally back working on this and I'm finding the current stage looks quite funny.

Separated the sleeves and put them on holders for now, the active stitches on the body are about 34" worth to make a loose fit jumper but they're on a 24" cable so they're squashed together making it look so disproportionate until it's bound off.

All seems to be going well though.

tl;dr: If I want to give some bright clean socks a vintage, and slightly faded look without any color bleeding, then should I hand wash them in something like lightly brewed tea or coffee?

They look like pic related. I just want to know /diy/'s opinion on the matter. Because I know bewing them with some tea would play nicely with the white in it, but I don't want it to screw with the blue in it and potentially turn it into some doo-doo brown looking color.

I just purchased some socks to wear, but the colors are much brighter than the rest of my clothing. I just want to find a way to give the socks that slightly vintage & faded look.

I know I could just go running on dirt trails with them on & continuously hand wash them afterwards or something to achieve a similar look over time, but I don't necessarily want them to look slightly stained and dirt. I just want to turn the chalk white in them into an off-color white/cream & the rest of the colors I want to be slightly faded.
>>
>>12600110
as someone who tried tea dyeing a shirt a few years back, you can get an off white color and I doubt it'll mess up the blue because most socks are machine washable so the hot water shouldn't affect the color. However, tea dyeing does not always give a consistent color, it may have dark and light splotches.

White smock anon here, made a pocket I might put on the shoulder

Should I keep it minimalistic and leave the pocket off?

I was thinking about adding internal suspension so it would rig like suspenders if you took off the jacket and left the straps on. Then I'd add pouches to those straps, like old fashioned military equipment. I think i've seen some techwear jackets do that, and I'm a little ashamed to say that most of these ideas i'm stealing from knoch

Don't use anything that paints onto the surface rather than being absorbed into the fibres. They're socks so the top is meant to be stretchy, and anything that paints on top (nail polish, paint) will crack and separate the more it stretches.
Ideally you'd need to actually dye the fibres, and for that you'd need a natural material sock like wool as synthetic fibres don't take most commercial fabric dyes very well.

The issue there is that you'd need them to find a way to prevent the colours bleeding and ruining the crispness of the stripes.

I feel like for the effort you'd need for the size of the project and the outcome you'd get for your effort, it would probably be easier to just find the proper name for socks like that and find like an athletic sock stockist or something rather than trying to DIY them.

Original sock poster here to help you out.

I bought three pairs from SheIn for dirt cheap. Sadly, I could only find them in women's crew socks and the quality is sort of like you said, lack-luster, but I don't mind spending $3 per pair.

Also, I'm pretty sure SheIn dropships from some Chinese manufacturer, so just keep in mind that you could potentially find some for dirt cheap on Alibaba or something.

As for dying your own socks, it would probably be pretty tough to do but I'm sure it's doable. You would probably have to section off the socks using tape, then to prevent the dye from bleeding, you would probably need to coat the white portions with some sort of liquid repellent, and then use a dye which you can spray onto the socks to better control running. The hard part would probably be finding a water repellent which wouldn't run as well.

You could potentially go the sewing route and sew in other socks to complete the red and blue bars, but that would probably look wonky.

If anyone else is wondering, I decided to lay a pair of the socks in a pan of tea for an hour. After taking them out of the pan, I noticed that there were large dark tea splotches on it. So in a last ditch effort, I threw them in the washer with some whites and bleached.

The finished result was almost perfect for the look I was going for; I've included a picture that shows a pair that I've only sent through the wash once vs the tea-treated pair, and I've added in the shoes that I wear with them to show more of what I was going for.

Linen is probably best if you live in florida, but what goku has on is probably just some cotton blend lol

Maybe a linen cotton blend if you can find it? Or a heavier linen, so it has some weight to it. A light linen would be too wispy and floaty for the color and make you look effeminate esp combined with the lavender color.
>>
>>12617719
Yeah, I was thinking a heavier linen, though if I can find a linen cotton blend that feels better I'll go with that. Might go for a slightly darker lavender, depends once I get shit together.

Also to be honest I've never really sewn before, would something like this be a good idea for a beginner project? I mean it's really just a short vest

>>
>>12617724
I don't know too much about sewing aside from being able to do minor repairs, but this should be pretty easy.
Just follow this >>12615380

When he says make a pattern, just put some paper over the shirt/sweater and outline it with a little bit extra for sewing allowance.

Where you'll connect the pieces should be obvious if you look at the shirt/sweater you use for the pattern. At most you should have 3 pieces to connect, the back, and the two front parts. Then just hem it all and add button holes if you wanted those.
>>
>>12617724
>>12617743
Tbh what i would do is take two layers of lighter material and make it two-ply, liner and shell. I would make two of the same vest minus any hemming/details, sew them together at all the edges minus the bottom, flip it inside out then fold in the bottom hem.
>>12617735

I didn't use edge paint for the cxl bag (black one) 'cause I didn't have it at the time nor even thought of finishing the edges. as for the new one, which is veg tan, I'll be finishing the edges on them the traditional way.

>how many stitches per inch
not really sure. I used a CS Osborne #700 chisel which has 3/32" spacing, while the veg tan bag uses Seiwa 3mm chisels. They're pretty tight space-wise.

Ok so this is just the beginning of what I want on these AF1'S. I started with sharpie because that's what was available but I plan to go over it with paint markers later and maybe add some color. My ideas are to add a message in morse code to the front outside sides of the shoe, which simple, and to add a zipper somewhere, which is the hard part. Have any anons tried this? Can I get some advice?
>>
>>12619138
Did you deliberately misspel the word on the left shoe?
Where do you imagine the zipper on them?
>>
>>12619223
It's misspelled? It's Serbian Cyrillic.
I'm not sure about zipper placement. The classic acronym side zip would look nice but I'm also considering a zipper straight down the tongue.
>>
>>12619258
Oh, misstook that for russian. Do you actually know the language? It's бeли instead of бeлo on google translate.
The side zip might look cool, but if the writing and the zipper is on one side, try to make it balanced, too much shit can make it look gaudy.
>>
>>12619138
Also I like the circle disign on the back, make sure it's neatly drawn when you're going over it with the paint.
Don't really have any advice on how to do the zip.
>>
>>12619138
if you're going to do a zipper, do it on the front tongue, like splitting the tongue down the middle. It's probably the easiest material on the shoe to sew through.

The problem is I can't find a way to translate it.
That would be super cool though it certainly looks interesting. If I can't find a way to translate the "grayscale" in its entirety I may just use "GS". Thanks for the idea.

glagoljica lettering is pretty cool though i'm not too familiar with it, the serbian language went through multiple major revisions during the past five-hundred or so years so there's quite a lot of variation and linguistic deadends, though i guess you could take the middle ground by using modern cyrillic in an old-style font like pic related, i'd also be able to help with translation.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been on vacation the past two weeks

But basically all I did was lay the flannel flat and then pour bleach on it. Like literally pour it on the flannel. Then let the bleach soak into the fabric until it changes to the color you want it. Then throw it in a bathtub and wash out the bleach with just water. Then throw it in the dryer for about an hour on regular

Anybody have a recommendation for a sewing machine? money isn't exactly an issue, I just want a machine that can make strong seams on ripstop and maybe cordura, nothing too crazy. All the Amazon reviews are pretty autismo, so I can't tell if a 150 dollar heavy duty singer will do the trick

when you crop pants do you just cut with some random ass scissors or is there any rule I have to follow? Also how do you think these jeans in pic related would look with derbies?
>>
>>12628359
do you want a hemmed edge or an unfinished one? if you want a clean edge, turn the pants inside out, cuff them, sew the cuffs twice and cut off the excess fabric on the inside.

>>12628169
if you aren't sewing through multiple layers of leather, most modern machines have you covered. ripstop and cordura isn't too tough compared to suede or leather.

>>
>>12628169
like the other person said, you'd be fine sewing through those on a regular machine
don't really have a recommendation, but be mindful of using the correct needle (pic related)

which, btw, OP, add this info to the pastebin
>>
>>12630262
>I want a more distressed look than that
Put it through the washing machine/dryer. That should make it look more frayed. If not, you might have to manually pluck the hem with tweezers or something.
>>
>>12630262
I once distressed a raw edge by rubbing sandpaper on it. It worked really well

how would I go about getting this pattern put on a sleeve? I already own the shirt needed
>>
>>12633777
Can you sew? Easiest way would be to buy fabric with the desired pattern if possible, then replace the sleeves.

If you can't find the fabric, you'll have to have your own printed up or make your own. You could probably make a stencil and use fabric paint to paint onto blank fabric before cutting it out and sewing up the sleeves.

Can't sew? Now your options are more limited, but you could still make a stencil and paint directly onto the sleeves, however, you'll have to rotate the shirt sleeves and do a section at a time so your paint can properly dry. You'll also have to tape off the shoulders and cuffs, and it'll be a lot harder to keep the pattern consistent.
>>

what was your blank?

reminder to pre-shrink fabric and/or pay attention to orientation when cutting pieces; I ran the smock I was working on through the wash to remove markings, one sleeve ended up 3 inches shorter than the other.

I got a sewing machine. Also picked an Olfa rotary cutter from Hobby Lobby
Do I need a cutting matt? And what about a bobbin winder?
>>
>>12637696
A cutting matt helps, i do my cutting with either a sharp knife and a matt or on the floor with shears. At least my sewing machine has a bobbin winding feature, most modern machines should, i'm not sure about yours. On my singer you just push the top bobbin pin to the right and it'll gear the pin straight to the motor.

I got it from Amazon so I haven't seen it yet. maybe I'll read the manual though, see if it has a bobbin winder
