I was looking into buying a watch first a Braun then a Seiko 5 Military. But as I went further and further down the watch rabbit hole people were getting very hostile about quartz watches, no matter how well made. They said a mechanical or automatic is the only REAL watch, and everything else is garbage.

Then I found that mechanical and automatic are actually inferior when it comes to timekeeping(the primary purpose of a watch) and all these autists care about is the "movement" (still don't know what that means), which to my knowledge has no bearing on the function or appearance of the watch. Are these people crazy or what?
>>
>>12581743
these watches just have a cult following and they are really comfortable, reliable and functional.

I'm happy with mine, maybe gonna cop a silver one next. we'll see. and it's great they are so cheap and you still get a quality wristwatch.

I've seen much worse but totally overpriced which didn't even come in a box.

>>12581773
they act like that because if you're a collector of valuable watches, then they have to be mechanical ones. quartz ones barely count for anything in the watch world if you're into luxury watches. that's all there is to it. there is absolutely nothing wrong with quartz.
>>
>>12581743
people like them because they are so cheap that if you lose them or damage them, it literally doesn't matter. you can just buy another one cheap.
>>
Sup fags,

Festival season is upon us and I'm looking for a Seiko 5 (SNK809) Type watch with 10 atm.

Original strap doesn't matter. I'd like the case to be somewhat decent. I'm planning on putting a nato strap on it to match the strap with what ever the fuck I'm wearing.

I just went through a similar phase. The trick is to not go into the rabbit hole in the first place, because it's full of virgins and dorks. In real life normal people don't care about what watch you, or they, are wearing, or if the watch has an unnecessarily complicated mechanical movement.

I'm probably going to get a f91w or a swatch

Are there any retro looking watches that aren't Timex?
>>
>>12581773
>>12581879
Wrong!

New collectors dismiss quartz but true collectors dont mind quartz as long as they are well made. The grand seiko quartzes spring to mind which regulates according to temperature.

I actually thought about Grand Seiko but that's just one brand after all.
>>
What's wrong with Quartz? isn't it more accurate than mechanical?
>>
>>12583354

The thing that's wrong with quartz is that everyone uses the same .5 cent movement as everyone else and barely any innovation happens.

There are exceptions like Grand Seiko and a few others that actually do cool stuff with quartz however.

Yeah. Unfortunately there aren't many of them.

I just bought pic related and I absolutely love it, it's beautiful. It's an older reference, not one of the current ones, and even then it was closer to $4000 so you'll probably need to stretch your budget a bit if you want a Rolex. An Explorer is one of the cheaper models, but stuff like Datejusts or Air-Kings are cheaper. Don't sink so low that you buy a beat up old Datejust missing the bracelet, though.

Some other options I considered were Tudor, Grand Seiko, and Sinn. Omega has some good models and some real shit, it depends what kind of Seamaster you're looking at. TAG is shit don't waste your money on that.

Your price range is high enough that you should worry more about finding something you like first and then worrying about the budget. Don't limit all your searches to watches under $2000 and then find what you really wanted was a $2100 watch you didn't even consider. On the other hand it's all kind of splitting hairs anyway, there's not a whole lot separating a $500 and $2000 and $5000 watch.

Retro vintage styled stuff is super popular now, there's way too many to list. Hamilton Intra-matic or Jazzmaster, a bunch of Longines and Omegas, the Seiko Turtle, Tudor Heritage line, several Grand Seikos, Nomos and other Bauhaus watches, Fliegers, tons of microbrands. At least give us a price range or something. What style, dressy or casual or a diver or a chronograph or what?

Price was around 1600 euros, not sure now with the release of the Connected Modular model.

Regarding features, well you have the classical Android Wear apps: text, email, steps, light, etc.

Not sure if it is Tag Heuer Connected specific but there is an "idle" face mode (attached pic) which can trick few people thinking it's a non-connected watch.

There's plenty of men's watches down to 36mm if you look for them. The F91W is a great option, too.

New Tissot V8 is beautiful imho, what do you guys think?
I liked also older more classical version but it wasn't as universal as this one, it looked like it was desigbed to be paired with fucking driving gloves.
It was unique but this one is better for daily use, I would call it poor man's speedmasters.
For about 400 usd the price/value ratio is very nice. For good quartz watch this would be pick no.1 for me.

A TT DJ with the jubilee bracelet is a classic watch, love it. It's a great watch for any occasion, but I still wouldn't wear it as a daily beater since it's too flashy for my taste.

Too popular and you want to be a special snowflake, it doesn't have handwinding, the chapter ring usually doesn't line up very well, the stock bracelet is shit so you need to buy another one, or what? Those are all pretty minor complaints.

Hey /fa/ thoughts on the attached image? Trying to decide which one or two I buy. Left to right:
MVMT 40 Black+Gold (40mm) - £120
MVMT 40 White+Gold (40mm) - £120
Instrmnt 01 White+Silver (40mm) - £180 (Also a White+Gold version)
Uniform Wares M40 (40mm) - £350
Uniform Wares M42 (40mm) - £600

I like the idea of getting two, or getting a gold and white faced one with a tan strap and a black strap to swap. Also anyone know good UK based fashion forums or places to cop second hand watches? Might buy all of them if I can find them cheaper

I need an advice from you guys.
I got 300 Euro to spend for a new watch. It should be an automatic and preferably a skeleton and have a classic look to it. I know I'm askin for a lot in that price range, but still, worth a shot.

1. is BUREI
2. is Stuhrling Original 747M.03
3. is Ingersoll IN4511RBK
4. is Lindberg & Sons SK14H002

I like the 4th best, what do you guys think? Should I get that one or one of the others. Or a completely different watch?

"minor complaints"

how automatics "work" is they wind as you wear them, but to get them running initially, you wind them via the crown (unless its a shitty SKX, of course). I'm sorry you couldn't afford better

You just pull the crown to set the time and that's enough impulse to get it ticking and then it just winds up by itself because the winding system is actually really efficient. All my other automatics don't need manual winding either, are you sure your watch is working right? Are you so sedentary that you can't keep an automatic watch running?

I think the SKX looks and feels pretty great but that's my opinion I guess. Putting a solid link bracelet on it makes it a million times nicer. Do you people not have cheap beater watches or what? Am I supposed to buy an $8000 Sub for when I want to change my oil or get sweaty or go for a swim?

I'm thinking of an 80's two tone datejust or maybe an explorer.

The orange-yellow dial on the Seiko is actually surprisingly nice looking in person, it has a great brushed finish to it. The case and bracelet are all chewed up though as you can see. That Seiko and the Omega are both my dad's watches from the 70s so I think they're sort of retro-cool, but I definitely understand if other people think they're weird and outdated.

Omega actually ran a big marketing campaign with those oval watches talking about how they were the first watches actually designed to fit the human wrist perfectly. Obviously that's total bullshit and didn't actually catch on.
>>
>>12605222
Get an Explorer and then put that diver on a proper bracelet where it belongs. How are you going to have a 200m diver on a leather strap that stinks like hell and turns to mush if you get it wet?

I think two-tone is an outdated look, but it's up to you and Datejusts are still very nice classic watches in steel or in two-tone. You are also kind of lacking in a dressier watch, I guess.
>>
>>12597939

Left is a SARG015.

The goal of my 4th watch is to work with a suit and not be redundant with any watch I currently own.
>>
>>12605240
I'm actually feeling the color more in that pic anon. And the fact that both of those watches are handed down to you is great. I've always been envious of people who got their father's or grandfather's watch passed down to them. My dad's been wearing g-shock for as long as I can remember, so not exactly anything to get excited about inheriting.

The current production 214270 Explorer has a matte dial and is definitely more on the sporty side. My 114270 has a nice shine and gloss to it and is a bit smaller so it can slide under a shirt cuff and do the job with a suit. It's still definitely an everyday more casual watch, though.

If I was looking for a dress watch I would do a light colored dial instead and probably a leather strap over a bracelet. I like the classic simple gold dress watch style, but that's also probably not something to wear every day and it's not something Rolex makes so you would have to look elsewhere. Unless you have a gorillion dollars to drop on a Cellini I guess, but even then that practically puts you in like JLC or even Patek and VC territory and who in their right mind would pass those up?
>>
Although it is rather a shitter, I love this watch.

I can't seem to find a good side-by-side photo showing the difference in the dials but just go through google images or something and you'll sort of see what I mean. Here you can at least see how pigfat the 39mm is compared to the 36mm.
>>
>>12605222
Considering all of the watches in your collection are inexpensive (hundreds of dollars), it seems odd to me that your first expensive purchase (thousands of dollars) would be something so gaudy and borderline "ironic" as a two tone rolex. I get that you want it to be different than the rest of your collection, but I think if you get the explorer and leave it on its bracelet that'll be plenty different.
>>
>>12605258

Have you looked at vintage IWC or Longines? They are getting more expensive, but their dress watches are unmatched at your pricepoint if you ask me.

I'm not rich and only make about 80k a year. I'm pretty prudent in my purchases and Rolex ticks all my boxes. I don't buy a watch with intention to sell it one day, but I like the idea of a watch that can hold it's value over time. Would an all steel datejust be as quintessential as the two tone one? I think it might be, but I could be wrong. I do really like the explorer, more than the datejust actually, I just don't know how much of a gap it leaves for something formal.
>>
>>12605690
pls respond
>>
>>12605751
Why don't you just buy the Explorer if that's what you like especially if you plan on being stuck with it for a while. You can get a cheap or cheap-ish dress watch later if you really need it, but you can probably live without it anyway. Even a vintage gold-cap Seamaster or Constellation or Longines or something can be had for under $1000 if you're willing to hunt around for one worth buying, those are classy as hell. Or for new watches in the hundreds range there's all kinds of Orients or Hamiltons or stuff in that range that are pretty nice.

>>12605787
>Le Apple font
I think it's kind of ugly, but I guess Mondaine isn't the worst quality watch you could've bought. I don't see why you'd need to pay inflated Swiss prices for what is basically a shit Chinese quartz watch that happens to be made in Switzerland.
>>
>>12605791
Honestly, as far as Mondaine goes, $200 for a decent quality Swiss watch is pretty good
>>
>>12605804
Yeah but my point was does it even matter that it's Swiss or not Swiss? It's a basic throwaway quartz movement built by machines stuffed in a case built by machines, who cares if the robots are sitting in China or Switzerland? There's not exactly some gnarled old Swiss master craftsman elf lovingly assembling the watch and making sure it's perfect just as the previous 8 generations of his family have done in the same tiny village in the Jura Valley.
