Actually there's a bit of a misconception that this idea of being heated in a kiln makes them better than shoes from Converse, Vans etc. They're vulcanised in a vulcanisation tank in exactly the same way that any other vulcanised sneaker is. It chemically changes the rubber to harden it from the sticky, soft form it's in during construction.

The only real difference between these and a pair of converse are the (small) changes they've made to the design, the fact they're made on a smaller scale, and that they say 'Made in Japan' on them.
