Chinos are probably a safer bet.

You can stack the denim depending on how you do it. One option is light vs dark denim for pants and jacket. Like dark jeans and stonewash looking jacket. You can match similar looking denim and pull it off, it's just harder. If you're gonna try that, I recommend a really light shirt under, ideally a white T or Henley. And never close the jacket. It'll look too Canadian tuxedo if you do.
