If you don't care about it being quartz or automatic, I would recommend the Tissot Courturier Chronograph. I have one, it looks very sharp, and the chronograph complication takes the watch a step back from being strictly a dress watch.

Also, you can get a quartz Junghans Max Bill for around that price, and they're very nice. Being from a company that's a part of the movement bringing the industry away from the Swiss for once, most watch-people will respect your choice.

If you want an automatic movement, I would go for the Seiko Cocktail Time or something from Hamilton. Both respected companies that make solid time pieces for the money.

I would avoid the big bezels if you're looking to be dressy in anyway. There are far too many investment hardos who wear they're financed Submariners with their suits not realizing how casual they look.

If you have small wrist go dressier so a leather or NATO strap. If I was you though would save up for an solid automatic watch, the Tissot everytime I recommend before is a quartz(which means its battery powered) watch nerds consider quartz to be cheap and have no soul , I only recommend it too you because of your price range, you cant go wrong with Tissot, Hamilton, or Seiko etc.. Just stay away from the cheap "fashion brands" like Daniel Wellington MVMT ,Nixon, Michael Kors, Armani etc..they are all made from cheap Chinese parts and cost less than $10 to make yet the sell them for 300...

I ended up going with the movado, I know price is not the only factor but it's a $1200 watch for $325, by far the nicest watch I've ever owned and decent enough for my purposes at this point in my life (28). I tried it on at Macy's and thought it fit great, so I went.

Well, just because the manufacturer says it's a $1,200 watch, doesn't mean it is worth that in reality. MSRP rates are often hiked up by watch brands simply because they'll be able to sell a higher volume to stores if those stores can then in turn tell costumers that they're saving a boat load of money. But I mean, Movado has its history, and with the recognizable design it makes their watches worthwhile for people who aren't watch snobs.

That's not to say that it isn't a nice watch, it certainly is, but there isn't very much horological beauty to it. Of course, if you don't give a shit about the inner mechanisms of a watch and the intricacies of watch making, then there's really no reason to go out and spend thousands on a mechanical, in-house, Swiss made movement. Your watch will keep more precise time and you won't have to wind it.

At the end of the day, the most important part about having a watch is if you enjoy it. You've said you're not well versed on watches, so I'm just explaining my rationale behind recommending other brands.

Why can't Timex make a cheap automatic movement? I have this in black with a green canvas band that I love, but the ticking is too loud. I love the look, but so wish it were an auto. I have the Seiko SNK, and it's similar, but I love the look of the Timex.

It came in today and I got it fitted. I didn't like how much it moved around so I had a guy tighten it, it's not restrictive but it does limit the flexibility of my list somewhat (the crown starts digging uncomfortably into my hand past a point).

It's literally all there in their self-description.
If you're getting into watches, the most basic rule is to buy watches made by watch makers, and not fashion designers. The latter make flashy watches with the cheapest parts that are horribly overpriced.
Sometimes fashion watches have neat designs that you couldn't get otherwise, so it may be somewhat justifiable to get one. However yours is yet another DW clone.

The 5th use "Japanese quartz" and are made in China. I'm gonna be positive and assume it's a Miyota movement made by Citizen. Now the thing is you can probably find the very same movement in Citizen watches at a 5th of the price.

Picture related is a Citizen Eco-Drive, meaning solar, so a steep step up from your regular Japanese quartz. It also costs less than yours.

Looking for watch suggestions. Been using this one my girlfriend got me for Christmas however it's developed a small crack in the bottom after a scuffle.
Now I'm looking for something more durable or cheaper to wear on a day to day basis so if I'm involved in a hands on I don't have to worry about it.

Oh so you're the zookeeper, my apologies. There's a Casio diver my dad wears to work, the model name is MDV106. He's scratched the shit out of it but it still works fine. It's a little more expensive than the most basic terrorist Casios, but it looks much nicer too.

If correction officer I would go with something rugged and tough. Wouldn't want a chimp ripping it off your wrist or damaging the watch band pulling on it.

it's automatic and you said you want reliability. mechanical watches lose or gain too much time in general if accuracy is your issue. that's the reason you actually need to go for a quartz watch instead.
the Pulsar one is better in that case because it's quartz. Seiko 5 looks better though and is smaller. the Pulsar one is 42mm case diameter and the other one 38mm.

What's a good place to buy a used Rolex? Crown and Caliber and Chrono24 seem to be the big sites, tons of smaller stores sell online too though. I really like the Explorer 114270 which isn't made anymore, it seems like most of these sites have them for $4000-$5000 in seemingly very good condition. I'm willing to pay a little premium for a legit honest seller, I'm a little scared to drop a few thousand dollars on ebay for something that turns out to be shit.

Indians take old Seikos and stuff and poorly repaint the dials with really ugly bright colors. I have never seen a Seiko that says JAPAN MADE on the dial like those do, and they should have a movement and dial code formatted like 1234-5678 at the bottom of the dial. Expect the movements to be absolutely trashed, too. They're not really fake, just thrown together out of a parts bin and "custom painted".

I don't know about new, but vintage should definitely be possible. Try to look for gold cap watches, they'll be cheaper than solid gold but a gold cap is much more durable than gold plating. You'll need to do lots of research though to make sure your watch is in good condition and original or close to original.

Some watches have shorter lugs which makes them wear smaller despite having a large diameter, see for example most of Seiko's divers which are 42mm+ but beloved by wristlets including myself. I'm not an expert autist on every reference of old Rolex, but I find it believable that a watch that old would have a bit of a fucked up dial. A watch that old will surely have been serviced and quite likely redialed, and each time the markers get pulled off and reapplied they don't go back on factory perfect to the last micron and if the dial was repainted then the lume dots will look like shit.

Its not that old, this is the 87 oysterdate precision. Its been serviced once by rolex but only to fix the winder.
Rather than ticking like my other watches the rolex from a distance appears to glide around the watch face, on closer inspection you see it is just ticking with more increments between seconds.
I think if it were fake rolex would have mentioned it when I brought it in no?

Casios/Seikos are constantly recommended because they are good. What tends to happen is lesser, more unknown brands tend to be harder to get ahold of. Or they are shit.

Timex Weekenders for example get recommended a lot, but they have multiple problems. Most "fashion" watches are gaudy without anything clean about them.

Up to like $500 there's entry or mid level Swatch brands like Hamilton or mid-level mechanical Seikos with the 6R movement or tons of microbrands with Miyota movements or basic ETAs. I would say there's plenty of stuff worth buying, lots of good watches which are a noticeable step up from cheaper ones. Around $1000 to a couple thousand is where the real no-man's-land is, there's maybe just a few decent brands in that price range, Sinn and other German brands come to mind and maybe the cheapest Grand Seikos.

Last I've heard they're very inaccurate and don't resist water one bit. As in they actually let sweat in, which makes them useless as a sport watch, which it was designed to be as far as I know.
