If you're using shoes to exercise in 3-5 times a week AND you want to wear them for running and potentially everyday wear how long do you actually expect them to last?
Runners typically replace their shoes around every 500 km. For anything you need a stable sole and ankle support for (e.g. lifting weights), you should be replacing them at least once a year. If you're wearing shoes for both and otherwise, you'll need to replace them probably twice a year?

I wear one pair of trainers pretty much everyday and I do what OP is describing. I have to buy new sneakers pretty much annually, the longest they last is a year and a half with everyday use. That being said I rock the hightop nike free trainers.
