But again, it's better to do it within the understood paradigm in a way that says "refined taste."

As for Nike, people where them simultaneously for their heritage and their novelty. You are probably much to young to remember when Nike was the new kid on the block, pioneering marketing from professional athletes, paying mj's penalty fees from wearing them in-game. They were the rebel company for a short while, but the image has changed.
As for the swoop, it's an easily identifiable branding, drawn with a single motion, that always provides a highlight or pockmark to whatever it's enscribed on. It embodies motion, flight, victory, joy, and a job well done.

Worn daily for work, I got just 9 months out of a pair of Free Run 2.0 Nikes. Most normal sneakers go for about a year when daily driven or worn hard. If you have a rotation going, 5 years should be very attainable for any sneaker.
