We (okay well not /fa/, but /o/) have been over this hundreds of times, the AE86 was popular well before being featured in Initial D. In fact it's used in Initial D because it WAS popular, notice how everyone in the show knows what an 86 is, but doubts it's ability to compete with the cars of the time. That being said, Initial D is a very large part of why it's still popular today, and it being Keiichi Tsuchiya's car of choice certainly helps quite a bit too.

TL;DR: The AE86 was popular before Initial D, which only elevated it to permanent meme status.
