go to amazon and check out Lorus and Pulsar watches. they are Seiko sub-brands for very little money but you get a great watch without even having to pay more than 50 bucks. they got all sorts of styles and I recommend them for watch noobs because this is how I kinda started out at first. pic related is one of their submariner related divewatches. you can see if you like them without dumping 300 bucks on a watch immediately. if you'd rather want a mechanical watch and not quartz, check out Seiko 5.

Was gifted this watch a few years back. It's oversized and overpriced, but it still has some pretty decent details.

It says Swiss made but I'm pretty sure the movement is actually Chinese, which would probably lend itself to explaining why I have the problem I do. When I try to wind it, the crown simply winds backwards. If I hold it and continue winding, I'm met with an increasing resistance.

Anyone know what the issue could be? I haven't taken it to a watch expert yet, but I don't feel like waisting my time if the fix will be more expensive than I feel this watch is worth. From research I've done, it sounds like the mainspring is broken, which may or may not be expensive depending on the movement.

Just get an appropriate size. The trend in the market nowadays is very large watches, so that's what you'll typically see many wearing, but there is a large market for 34 mm and 36 mm watches that will suit you. Thin wrists call for thin watches with a smaller diameter, which unfortunately will exclude you from the more sporty watches that are very popular right now (most chronos & divers), and will probably land you with dressier watches.

Hi /fa/ I've never really been to this board but I am starting to take my appearance more seriously lately by wearing more mature/masculine clothes, nice shoes, cologne, etc.

There are other types of watches as well, but that should get you started. Those are all very popular and respected for their price range. Don't forget you can switch out the strap on any of these watches. Look them up on google images or something for inspo on this. The SKX007 is probably the most versatile of the three. You could wear it on a metal bracelet for a dressier look (although not necessarily "formal") or dress it down with a nato strap for a more casual look.

random ghost is a New Gent model. they have the exact same problems I mentioned. I don't know how it is with the irony models (steel-case and aluminium swatches) but even those could be loud ticking as fuck.

I know it first hand though btw because I own a swatch standard gent model. it's the Sir Blue and I can't even wear it because it's so annoying and amazon costumers all say it's a problem throughout their whole catalog, so pretty much any plastic model ever ticks too loudly.

Looks and wear great. Ticking is about as quiet as a running leaf blower. I literally have to suffocate the watch under cloths and tuck it away across the room when I'm trying to sleep. I have the Waterbury chronograph and it's silent. After all the tiny sub dial is the one doing the ticking. But even that has other issues, the chronograph hand tick does not line up with indices - to be expected for a $100 watch. But what's not cool is the chronograph's zero position is not aligned with 12 o' clock. Maybe just triggering my autism but that shit drives me up the wall because I've handled multiple cheap chronograph that never have these issues. My dad wants to get me a watch as a graduation present, what should I get? He didn't really give a budget, but I don't really want to make my parents spend more than like $3000 or so but I guess I'm open to suggestions. I wear divers almost every day so I thought about maybe a nicer diver, but I love having a cheap beater SKX so much that I'm not sure how I would feel about wearing a diver worth a bunch of money. I already have a sentimental dress watch, too. So I guess that leaves a sort of a casual watch, maybe a chrono.

I already have some vintage Omegas that were my grandfather's and my dad's so having my own would be neat, but modern Omegas seem too damn expensive and I'm not crazy about them. I guess the blue-dial Aqua Terra is pretty nice, I sort of like the Speedmaster Professional too. I like Tudors too, the Ranger especially. I've been looking at some Sinn or Damasko watches. I've wanted a Grand Seiko for a while, but I already have so many damn Seikos. I really hate Nomos and other trendy Bauhaus stuff.

Any more suggestions?

My primary watch. I got it about 8 years ago for $360. It's essentially a glorified Seiko with quartz moment. Definitely more than I'd prefer to pay for quartz, but I couldn't say no to the aesthetic of the thing. It is very comfortable to wear, I keep it in its case to keep the band in shape.

The only problem is I got a small blemish on the steel and that one little imperfection really mars the smooth, minimal outer case.
