Why is art so expensive? I'm trying to buy some effay wall

It's so that the budding artist can get rich quick and the buyer feels a sense of status. Doesn't matter what the paining looks like.

There are high quality prints you can get if you just want the art for decoration.
If you want original art go visit local galleries, get interested in local displays, you can even go to art departments in colleges see if there's anything interesting - some really nice finds out there if you know where to look

I got a beautiful photograph of old penn station (new york) for about $30 from a company in my building that was closing their doors. They said it would have been $150 new.

Having an artist as an ex-gf, if you're buying a good painted piece with lots of layers and complexity, it can cost hundreds of dollars for the paint alone if it's a decent sized piece like a 4x5 or something. Then they also put like 100 hours into the painting, so they're making less than minimum wage if they charge like 500 for it.

That's why you just go to an antique shop somewhere in your area and try to find some cool shit there.
