Is there any difference between the random assortment of ones from China on eBay? Any difference between paying $9 and $12?

some fakes have discolight functions and keep time really badly. some watches with metal bracelet might be cheaply made too so that it could actually fall off your wrist or the clasp is all fucked up and the edges are uncomfortable and sharp.

it's a resin case so yes it will last. the glass is plastic though so that might get fucked up sooner or later getting scratches and all.

Hey, cool thread. I've actually been complimented on this piece in public. It was pretty funny, the guy actually asked if it was an F-91W by name and called it a "beautiful machine." I had no idea they were so popular until that, it was just a watch I'd been keeping in my drawer for years after the strap broke. I put a NATO strap on it because I needed a watch and I've been wearing it since.

I've got two questions for those who might be more knowledgeable: first, why is it yellow/gold? All the other F-91Ws I see have blue accents. My mom got this for me for Christmas a long time ago so I have no idea where it's from, and weirdly enough hers is also blue. Is it a fake or something? Do these watches even have fakes?

Secondly, how do you fix a muted watch? I tinkered with it a while ago when the display was on the fritz and managed to fix that, but since then the hourly beeps and the alarm have been muted. Any known fixes for this?

the golden frame of your watch is normal. It's just a different color variation of the F91w. there is one with a green frame as well. the blue ones are the most common ones that are being sold. so don't worry, it's not a fake. Looks really cool. They sell fully colored ones since a while now too.

if you press the bottom right button for 3 seconds the display should show "casio" on it.
if it does, it's most likely not a fake.

if you press all three buttons you should see all the black LCD characters the watch has at once. press any button to remove that view.

Just a heads up, these don't have any sort of back-light in them. Once its lights out you wont be able to see anything on it. Also the screen is not the strongest compared to the F-91w line of watches. Viewing at a angle is not as clear.

If you happen to be set on the F91W for its minimalist looks and small size, and don't want a bulkier GSHOCK, then you could try hydro-modding your watch.

I did it to my F91W two weeks ago and aside from some excess oil leaking out in the first two days after, it's been solid since then. I don't swim or otherwise have any method to pressure test it, though, but in theory it should be a lot more resistant to water pressure.

It's pretty easy. I'd recommend Googling it for a guide and pictures, but the basic process is you'll want to open up your watch (being careful not to lose the screws or damage the gasket, etc.) and remove the watch components. The LCD screen will have a thin sheet stuck to its surface. You should be able to peel it away with your finger nail or some tweezers. If you rotate it 90 degrees, you should see the screen invert dark/light. But, obviously the original polarizer won't be the right dimensions, so you'll have to buy a sheet of polarizer that you can cut as needed. Slap it on there and then put it all back together.

Oh, sorry, I assumed you meant inverting the display colors. If you meant hydromodding, then again, Google is your friend, but basically you disassemble the watch, dunk it in a bowl of mineral oil (usually sold as a laxative in your pharmacy, if you can't find it elsewhere) and get all the air bubbles out from the components. Then reassemble it while it's still submerged.

Though that led mine to leak a fair bit of excess oil. I kept re-tightening the backing screws (only finger tight) until I eventually just let them all loose so that oil could freely seep out from the backplate via gravity, or you could press on the back to force some more out, before finally tightening the screws back down.

Just wash it with some Dawn dish soap or something to clean up the oil.

I was worried about air bubbles getting in, but I've yet to notice any creep up to the display, like this dude's watch.

I own a W-59 now which probably has the very same backlight and I can honestly say it's not so bad. I thought it would be worse based on what I saw in video reviews but it does light up the display sufficiently. I tested it at night.
