depends on your hair type and length. just show a pic of this to your barber and they'll even style it for you. just ask what sort of product is best and they also advise you on that.

i personally use schwarzkopf istylers texture clay, its pretty good for that messy look and super cheap.

your hair needs to be naturally thick for sure, and being wavy helps. I've been doin no-poo for a while which gives my hair more thickness, a shine, and lets me style it with very little product. I have naturally thick wavy hair anyway though. If you wash it little as possible, then deal with it first thing in the morning it should stay as it is. I just rinse it with water in the shower, then use a bit of conditioner as product - slick it back, sometimes wear a hat whilst it's wet. product + water gives it the nasty unkempt look

can confirm. have thick wavy hair, and my hair literally does this if I simply skip washing my hair for a couple days. alternatively a cream or light hold wax can help, just style it with your fingers instead of a comb.
