What's the appeal of tattoos? I'm not trying to start shit, I just really don't get it. At best it's really small stuff like OP and I can live with it, but larger stuff in more noticeable places of the body, it feels like willingly putting a blemish in my skin, in my mind.

I've been thinking of getting the monkey throwing the bone in 2001: A Space Odyssey tattooed somewhere on my back, probably over a shoulder blade.

Pic is the scene in question along with some work from the artist I'm thinking of getting it from. The actual tattoo probably won't be either of these exact frames, but some kind of composition of the two, or an artistically idealized version of this particular moment.

To me, this scene was the moment I knew I loved film. The jump from bone to spaceship instantly communicates in a fraction of a second everything that Space Odyssey is about, which is incredible since it's a film which reflects on the totality of human progress.

Is this idea shit or not?

Also factor in that the better artists tend to not be able to get lot of practice in with darker skin so even then some of their work may not pop as much as they'd like. I want to get a couple more on my left arm, but have no idea what to get. How the fuck do people even decide what to get tattooed? I doubt half of these have any actual meaning to the person, but they still look good. How do you even come up with these designs, and what helps you go through with getting them? What do you say to people when they ask about them?
